awesome stuff. i like the look of aussie without mcgrath and warne :P
none of their bowlers looked great, but they were getting hammered i guess.
and i remember saying in the fielding thread that i didnt rate bevan as a fielder cos he doesnt watch the ball into his hand, and last night he dropped that high catch because of it.

I on a positive side I thought Watson was Fantastic today he only got 2-72 but had 3 cathes droped off his bowling and his figures were very respectable considering. he also made a great 35* to almost snatch the bounus point.
If 2-72 is fantastic, then you either have low expectations of him, or are influenced by the people that think he's the finished article already!

Also about your comments on the fielding...Nasser Hussain is a superb fielder so I'm not sure what he's done to upset you. Trescothick has a good pair of hands but Vaughan is a bit dodgy even though he can take superb catches and is rated highly, he lets the ball past him too often. White is a very good fielder and the slips cordon is good enough. It's not as bad as you think.
I knew you'd say that about the catching. :D

Both you and Neil are correct to say that all those guys can catch very well but on the whole, their ground fielding is average. Craig White is very solid, yes, but you'll notice I didn't mention him. ;)

I just haven't seen much to suggest that someone like Marcus Trescothick or John Crawley could pull-off a direct-hit run-out having dived to stop a bullet from Matt Hayden, for example. If they could, the Ashes series would have been a lot closer.

Have you forgotten he's Australian though? If an English bowler did that then he'd be crap...

Yeah Jayasuriya and Atapattu .... What a combination !!!

Atapattu with classical high elbow, elegant textbook stuff .. all straight lines, combined with the "Short arm jab swoosh" carefree style of jayasuriya. its a treat I tell you. I ve been lucky to see a couple of breath taking innings from Jayasuriya, When he is on song he plays with such reckless abandon and joy like a school boy.... its infectious.

Crawley is a great Short Leg fielder, but in the Ashes we didn't have anyone worthy of a short leg!

Yeah but I can bat like that too :P

He is a slogger that's why his average is low really.

Call him whatever name you want...but this is the guy who has singlehandedly changed the face of one day cricket forever.

Well Mr. Rik .... Ain't you the brave one on the "keyboard" ? If you are that good what are you doing typing couching behind a computer ? .... instead of taking it to the pacies like shoaib, lee, macgrath ?

Last time Ive checked I havent seen your name on the record books for the fastest 50's century's or highest number of sixers not to mention the most runs in an over, such as jayasuriya. lol

LoL..... however I understand you Rik ..... sometimes Its nice to be able to dream..... you must be a true CyberWarrior.

Legglancer: Rik's entitled to his opinion and just because he's not a world-class batsman, doesn't mean he can't comment on others. If that were the case, no-one would ever question a doctor's diagnosis or a mechanic's price. There's no need to be so inflammatory.

Rik: A bit harsh to label Jayasuriya as merely a slogger, don't you think? The term 'slogger' has overtones of 'fluke' when considering how many innings like last-night's Jayasuriya has played, surely he couldn't fluke it that much. :)

Sanath is awesome. After the game he said that he had decided to stick to his natural game. In the other games he hadnt been smashing the ball around earlyon, but last night he decided to make the first 15 count.

Sure he rode his luck but it might be what he needed to kickstart his world cup campaign.

I wonder how the selectors are feeling after the reserve players got hammered. Hogg in particular was awful. I can't understand how he got there in the first place and now he's off to the world cup.

The match also showed that my opinion of Tiffen's umpiring is 100% correct. How he couldn't give those lbw's against Lee late in the game I'll never know. He seemed eager to fire them out in the test match. I'd go so far as to say that he is the worst umpire in world cricket.

I agree completely, the sri lankans might have felt pretty hacked off if they had given away the bonus point too. Lucky the bowler was Jayasuriya, he was pretty good natured about it.
As a spinner myself I find the Umpires arent very willing to give lbw decisions, even when the batsmen are right back on their stumps they always worry about the turn. grrrrrrrr.:!(

I think that's probably more to do with trajectory than anything else. It's much easier to see where an off-spinner is going relative to the amount of spin they impart on the ball. Unless you can develop a flipper-like delivery, get used to it. :) Seriously, even your toppie won't save you because with wrist-spinners, they bounce so there's doubt as to height etc.

As for umpiring, I always tend to think that umpires give LBW's out too readily these days. It seems you only have to vaguely hit the mark and boom, LBW goes your way. I like the umpiring style of guys like Venkat and Shep where LBW's are only given out when they are virtually plumb.

yeah i hardly ever get out LBW, but i often get well forward, i get alot of then with my Off cutter which stays lower than my off break, i also have a good skidder which claims LBW's
