what a shame to see ponting not walk when it really mattered the most. he championed the argument of "asking the fielder". it sure got thrown out of the window there. what a hypocrite. the umpires also shd have referred it to the 3rd umpire. ohh the virtues of playing @ home.
Absolutely spot on !!

The Umpires were bloody shockers as well. I mean I can understand Peter Parker(being an Aussie) but is this guy Mark Benson really a neutral Umpire ? WTF was he doing not referring it to the third umpire !!

He will be telling a massive cheating lie if he were to say that he was able to see it from his position at square leg that it was spilled .

Unless of course, the Umps had been given a little secret briefing that Cricket Australia wants a 3rd final at all cost!!:)

What's with the confusion about Ponting? Ponting called for agreements between sides to take the word of the fielder. eg: If you take the word of our fielders, we will take the word of yours, regardless of the circumstances, thus promoting the spirit of the game.

No captain has accepted his offer, so clearly he shouldn't be held to it either. There was obvious doubt about whether or not Jayawardene caught it, Ponting didn't think he did, the umpires couldn't say that he did, and under the rules they cannot go to the third umpire for catches unless they are unsighted.

Get it? Third umpire cannot be called. It's nothing to do with playing at home.

So where exactly is the problem? Ponting stood his ground, as he is entitled to do until the umpires give him out, and the umpires gave him not out. End of story.
yep dont know why everyone's all down on him like if he did somethig wrong

Just seen it - umpires were unsure, end of story. No amount of wishful thinking can change that - and there's no way that Ponting ought to have walked anyway.

As far as Murali's figures are concerned - they are the worst in a 50-over ODI - ever, by anybody.

Murali is 2nd worst, Blignaut got hit for 96 in 9 overs, not sure if that was a 50/50 over game though

Punter should have "led by example" and walked
No, he was perfectly within his rights to stand his ground. Why on earth should he walk if he doesn't know, and the umpires are unsure?

Doesn't work like that.

Blignaut could have taken 6 wickets in the final over (ridiculous as it sounds) - sorry, chalk another record up to Murali.

Why? If none of the other international captains will take his offer and walk on the word of the Australians, why should he walk on the word of other teams?

his team batted first, so was hard to judge. Ponting is the captain of the best team in the world, and as such should be a leader in fairplay and sportsmanship.

It was ridiculous that they did not go to 3rd umpire.

You still do not notice that it was not able to be referred to the third umpire.

I remember when people knew the bloody rules of cricket! When the umpire can see the ball, they can`t refer it to the 3rd Umpire, I`m pretty sure. And hence, Ponting was quite right to stand his ground, and his decision is certainly backed by the replays, which were certainly inconclusive.

Great match, great entertainment. Symonds was amazing, what an athlete. And for Bracken to get four... Jayasuriya AND Sangakkara!

Ignoring for the minute that the law says they don't go to the third umpire, the 3rd umpire would have made the same decision if past incidents are anything to go by. Any hint of the ball bouncing up into the hand has been deemed sufficient doubt every time I've seen a catch referred, and I would have predicted the same result here. It's not the ideal situation, but it's at least consistent, and so fairer than a lot of calling in the game (LBW's anyone?).

Maybe fair play and sportsmanship exists on the village green, but when thousands of dollars are at stake, you dont want to be thinking about fair play and sportsmanship..

Fact is he wasn't given out, therefore doesn't have to leave the crease..

Katich gets out early, and Australia make a record score.

I don't think the two things are necessarily unrelated.

Well said.

Just imagine the Aussie batting line-up with Jaques instead of Katich! Smack-o-rama!
