The umpire ruled that the batsman was trying to avoid the ball. Under the laws of the game, when your feet are past the crease, and you jump in the air to avoid the ball, you can not be given run out.
I was under the impression you could only be deemed avoiding the ball if you have made your ground, and then subsequently moved back out of your crease to get out of the way?

I doubt it...Gilchrist and many of his team-mates have been floating on thin ice for a while now, while they preach respect for the game excetera, they do not practice what they preach. While Ganguly, etal get suspended or fined, the Aussies escape with nothing, it's been happening far too long.
Lol he was being sarcastic ;)

Dippenaar was out IMO, because he didn't get his bat across the line and hence the "dodging the ball to avade injury" law is irrelevant. Otherwise you could "avoid injury" half-way down the pitch and be not out. His foot was also far from 'certainly down over the line' so it should have been referred. That being said, he may have been given the benefit of the doubt with the replay. Either way, Gilly went overboard with his complaining to Dar. What if he did that to an LBW decision? An outside edge decision? Would have been deemed inappropriate. The same goes here.

Glad to see some consistency being shown now.

The Aussies didn't even appeal for that run-out. It wasn't until they saw it on the big screen that they questioned Dar and by that stage it was too late.

Accepted - gladly. The little things are important.

Don't you think that it's the little things in life - the sights, sounds and smells that make life so worth while?

The crisp crunch as you walk on snow that has felt the frost for the very first time, the smell of newly-baked bread under the arm of the fleeing little soon-to-be-Australian urchin, the smell of freshly-mown hay on a dewy summer's morning, the bleating of lambs as the frolic across the field, blissfully unaware that a New Zealander is (voice fades into distance)

That's why I wrote 'when your feet are passed the crease'. Not saying that, in this case, the batsman's were or weren't - I havent really seen it yet. Im just setting out what Dar's reasoning was.

Regarding the resting of Gilchrist, I really think the Aussies need to get over this "oh poor us, we play too much cricket and are over-worked" mentality. I think it's this sort of attitude that contributed to them not training as much as they should have, or as hard as they should have, in England during the Ashes. That they did not train hard enough in England, was a point even the vice-captain conceded when they returned to Australia.

I mean, they had two whole months off in the middle of last year. How many other highly paid professionals - at the top of their field - get that? By all means, if Gilchrist is physically tired, he should be given a breather. But I think the players need to have it explained to them that they really do not have it too bad in life. That a fair chunk of them then go and play County cricket in the off-season also undermines their case.

however he has no right argueing about it to the umpire, after the umpire has made his decision ... he is not the captain .
That's irrelevant, the captain has no right to argue either.

MacGill can handle the bat as well as if not better than Bracken and Clark., though his fielding does leave a lot to be desired.
i'd give you Clark but not Bracken.

Understatement of the year.
Could someone float the name of a single international umpire who hasn't been castigated within these forums over the last 12 months?

Taufel. Mainly because he rarely umpires Aus ;)

Good call, Jack.

A couple of the Indian and Pakistani fans castigated him in equal measure (a bit) during last year's series, and that's about it.

Mr Taufel is as well-loved on here as chicken curry is in my house.

I didn't even hear an appeal with that run out that should have been out. I haven't seen it since it happened but I dont think there was a huge roar from the aussies.
There were actually appeals from some of the aussies, in particular symonds.

To me the decision not to go to the third umpire was based more on Aleem Dar wanting to portray an image of being "stubborn" and "not bullied" to the cricketing public. I think he did it pretty well in the end. Despite the guy breaking all sorts of hopeless umpiring decision records in his last couple of matches at least he made a good effort in upkeeping his status in a cricket game. I just think that the Aussies have just about given up on dar being an umpire and are just going to write him off as a lottery in the future.

Bring back Bowden. Makes dar look less bad.
