Even though Australia has not really once probably fielded a full strength side (except first game)

well think about it, they've been chopping and changing ever since that first match. Regardless of what the full team may be, the players may have just been called in without time to settle then kicked back out again. They haven't had a solid side is probably a better way to describe it. I'd say the same team they brought in for game 1 (interchange Kasper for McGrath) will probably be the team they go for in the finals, although as we all know, a cloud hangs over Symonds at the moment. I personally don't think he should be dropped right away, but if he continues failing, then they should consider it.

Yeah, let's leave Kaspa out who was equal with Symonds and Clarke for One Day Player of the year. We need to stop underestimating his ability in the One Day Game. Give me his wicket taking ability and control over Lee any day.

He didn't play enough, and Lee is the leading wicket-taker, whereas McGrath and Gillespie are both in great form. I can't see who we'll drop unless you want them to play a 4th. bowler and drop Symonds or Lehmann.

It almost felt like Bravo was (barely) holding everything together on his own during Pakistan's innings today. I thought he bowled and fielded brilliantly, but got the maximum punishment for the odd loose delivery to Afridi and Inzy.

A poor performance by Lara in terms of field settings and bowler management, lacklustre from Collins (probably because he wasn't fully fit) and the "5th bowler" was taken apart - Gayle's injury has been really costly in this series.

Bravo apart, the fielders didn't cope well with the uncharacteristically impressive - barring the early mix-ups - running between the wickets of the Pakistani batsmen.

Obviously, the quick dismissals of Sars and Shiv were the turning point in the chase. Although I was dozing off at the time, having been up virtually all night, I thought Windies had things well in hand and so the shots seemed a trifle rash. Can't really blame Hinds for his dismissal. Browne had just struggled to get off strike and a boundary was needed.

Overall, a disappointing series for West Indies. We knew the bowling was weak, but it took too long to get the balance of the side right (i.e. include an extra bowler) and the batting never really clicked.

I was complaining about that when they sent Razzaq before Afridi , I think, in42 over. Surely, it should have been Afridi because they needed as many runs as possible in less overs and not one run per ball.
With 8 overs left, I'd back Razzaq more often than Afridi.

If it were 4 left, I'd look the other way.

With 8 overs or 8 balls, between Razzaq and Afridi, I would take Razzaq anyday.

CORRECTED THE ERROR !

BTW, I wish West Indies had done better but really the better side won and if at all the Aussies are to be given a fight then between these two sides it has to be Pakistan who can do it.

I'll venture some series ratings - out of 10 - for the Windies squad, 7 being average-ish.

Gayle 3 - Gayle's ineffectiveness with bat (barring one brisk half century against Pakistan) and ball (largely due to injury) was a crippling blow. Gets a 3 thanks to his impressive slip catching.

Hinds 7 - Has to be given credit for the ton, painstaking though it was at times. Also had a couple of decent cameos, but too expensive with the ball and a little cumbersome in the field.

Marshall 5 – His brief showing against a rampant Lee was encouraging and looks very good in the field. Should probably have had another chance.

Lara 8 - I’m rubbish at assessing captaincy, though he didn’t do a great job today. Has been in good nick with the bat highlighted, of course, by the exhilarating knock at Adelaide. Should be batting at 3.

Sarwan 7 – Has looked scratchy at times, wonderfully fluent at others. Should have finished the job today.

Chanderpaul 7.5 – Has looked in prime form and been sharp in the field, but a few untimely dismissals blot his copybook. Should also have finished the job today.

Samuels 5 – Nicknamed “The Elegant One” and regarded as the Second Coming by some Caribbean (mostly Jamaican) fans. Still looks like style over substance to me, though he gets marks for looking more committed than usual in the field (i.e. he appeared to be awake most of the time) and providing the most reliable part-time bowling option (would have been handy today). Was also an unlucky run out victim when starting to look dangerous against Australia.

Powell 4 – Confirmed that he’s a middle-order slogger/specialist fielder rather than an international quality top-order batsman. Was painful watching him today.

Bravo 7.5 – Don’t think there are any better fielders in world cricket and bowled really well today, though he has been a little wayward during the series. Unfortunately, he’s not much more than a busy tail-end batsman at the moment.

Browne 8 – Has kept wicket really well, highlighted by a great intuitive stumping today. Struggled with the bat, but would have got us home in the decider with top-order support.

Bradshaw 7 – As steady and reliable as he’s been throughout his too brief international career. Not a “death” bowler and – to put it kindly - less than electric in the field, but certainly here to stay.

Collins 9 – Windies’ player of the series having emphatically rubber-stamped his status as the most consistently penetrative bowler in the Caribbean. An improved fielder too and would have got a 10 if he’d conjured an Afridi-esque, quick fire 20-odd today.

Dillon 2 – Possibly deserves better for his handy 2-46 against Pakistan, but otherwise a waste of space.

King 7 – An encouraging comeback. Unlike Dillon, looked to be bowling to some sort of plan, which was essentially to not give the batsmen room and to aim at the stumps a lot (a handy tip he ought to have passed onto the fielders). Occasionally strayed too straight as a result, but looks like he might still be a handful in more helpful conditions.

It would be ideal to have McGrath, Lee, Gillespie and Kasprowicz and drop Hogg, but that will never happen due to over rate concerns. And, Lee has done more than enough in this series to justify his selection in the final, so Kasprowicz will be the unlucky one who misses out. It's basically the same situation as with Lee and the test side over the last year - whatever he was doing off the field, the three pace bowlers in the side were doing more than enough to keep him on the sidelines. Kasprowicz faces the same thing now.

last game against Pakistan had a full-fledged side as far as I am concerned.
And this arguement can also be applied to Pakistan who are without arguably their top four bowlers in the form of Shoaib, Kaneria, Shabbir and Saqlain. [Not to mention Malik and Sami who are pretty good in ODI's]

You forgot Umar Gul...(the 4 wicket taker last year at home soil against India in the second test match won by Pakistan)

I personally don't rate him a lot; much of what I have seen from him has been ordinary and inspid barring the performance at the greenishhh top at Lahore.

Great performance by pakistan to reach the finals after missing their top pacers and after losing the test series badly.Breaking news is that Naveed ul hasan ranas father has unfortunatly passed but like the fighter he is he has decided to stay on for the finals.
This is from Bobs site
Bob woolmer updates:

Thanks for all the support and it was agood day today although we have just learnt of the Death of Rana Naveed's father and I wish to send my sincere condolonces to his family. Rana is being comforted by the team as I write.

We have also learnt that Aamir Sohails father has just died as well and the team send their condolonces to his family as well.

It is sobering to realise that cricket is not everything and life is precious.

Yes, I just read about that as well, though, didn't know about Aamir Sohail's father.

Naved-ul-Hasan loses father

Cricinfo staff

February 1, 2005

"Pakistan's joy at reaching the final of the VB Series has been tempered by the news that Rana Naved-ul-Hasan's father has died. Rana Mehdi Hasan, 60, had been suffering from a lung infection and passed away during the match.

It is the second time in as many matches for Pakistan that one of the squad has suffered in this way – after Sunday's victory over Australia, Younis Khan flew home to attend the funeral of his father, and was said to be "shattered" as he departed from Perth Airport.

A spokesman for the Pakistan Cricket Board expressed his condolences in a statement. "We realize that you were far away on national duty on the tragic day and fully share your grief. May Allah Almighty bless the departed soul and give you and your family the strength to bear this loss."

The burial will take place on Wednesday in his home town of Sheikhupura. Naved's mother has asked her son not to return home, but to continue on the tour and take part in the finals."

Wow, I'm not sure how much Naved will be able concentrate on his game if he misses his father's funeral, but it is his mother's wish that he plays for his country. What a sad tour it has been for the Pakistani team, first Younis Khan's father and now Naved's.

Just read on cricinfo that Clarke will be opening for Aussies in the VB series final and beyond. I think that might be a bad thing, for Pakistan that is. :p

On another note, is this a cool picture or what:

I didn't watch the game, so what the hell happened here? Where did the bat land?

The bat is in his left hand.

It could also have the reverse effect and make him play even better. Having said that, it is a sad time for the Pakistani team.

Well-played Pakistan, but I can't help but get upset at the dismissals of Lara and Chanderpaul. We had that game...
