Well, I wasn't around tbf. If Stokes can become a 40 and 30 averaging player than by all means great, but I've always been a "pick the best six batsman, best three seamers and best spinner" believer, so if there are significantly better batsman available than Stokes I wouldn't pick him.
Normally i'd agree but if you have 5 real bats a keeper averaging 35+ an all rounder and then Broad at 8 then that is fine. It is clear off this tour we need the 5th bowler which Stokes is so he should be given time to develop.

What a crazy comment. First up you can't compare a batting allrounder with a bowling allrounder and if you are just setting the bar for allrounders in general by Kallis then there are a hell of a lot of esteemed players that were a "waste of space" in your opinion.

That's like saying Lyon is a waste of space because he is not of Warne quality.
It's not unfair to say that a bowling allrounder batting in the top 6 weakens a team if you make a couple of assumptions about the strength of the batting alternatives.

A spinner occupying a spinner's spot is completely different to an allrounder occupying a potentially better batsman's spot.

But I think the Flintoff thing has been done a thousand times so we'll leave it there.

SSN just put a remarkable stat. England have lost their last five wickets for under 100 runs 11 times this year, compared to just twice for Australia. They've played the same number of tests this year...

God, don't give the Test to ****ing Manuka. Of all the moribund decks to play cricket on....

The key today will be if England can play with nothing to lose. If they get nervous, then the runs will dry up and wickets will come. If they keep the run rate going, as the runs to get gets smaller, it will be Clarke that gets nervous and puts up more defensive fields. An early wicket will probably be all it takes though, for English hopes to go.

Get rid of all the bogan grounds and make it a two test series. That way there is more time for the more important big bash.

If they're ditching the WACA I wouldn't be surprised if they go for Subi tbh. I think they're thinking about playing Tests at the new Perth Stadium once it's built.

Oh yeah! Masterchef featuring celebrity cricketers, cooking up the menus as in England's 80 page gourmet book that toured Australia in the infamous last ashes 2013.
And tasting it tonight will be Monty Panasaar!!! Cue to audience going mad, Monty sheepish grin holding a cup of apple juice.

Well I hoped for some optimism heading into day five and I guess after that opening session there were signs of some fight thereafter. The morning session was a disaster, fielding catastrophe's, unable to contain a very positive Shane Watson and a first ball dismissal for our skipper.

Root and Carberry worked hard till lunch, and generally looked in little trouble but as has been the case throughout a wicket comes out of nowhere and no batsman can manage to set their stall out and play that long innings that we have missed in every single innings. Bell and KP both showed glimpses of their attacking prowess which ultimately proved their downfall but at least they looked to challenge the Aussie attack and try and put some pressure back onto them just as the impressive Ben Stokes did.

I still hope for some way out of this but obviously in reality a couple of early dismissals and this could all be wrapped up before lunch. I hope Stokes maintains his positive approach just as Prior will do despite his confidence that must be absolutely shot. Can these two put on a big partnership just to offer a few scares to the hosts ? With Bresnan, Swann and Broad to come maybe we can edge towards respectability, but this Test will not have been lost in this fourth innings as we know.

And if no clear winner emerges from all or this, a two man sack race will be held on consecutive Sundays until a champion can be crowned.
