Because only 7% of ATP tournaments are played on grass Wimlbedon alter their seedings based on grass court performances. They don't just pick and choose who they like, there is a mathematical system to do it and its fairly complicated.

1/3rd of tournaments are played on clay so the french open has to stick to the rankings to award their seedings, which is fair enough.

Gustavo Kuerten returns to the French after a two year absense. May not be the force he used to be, but given he's a 3 time champion he's not someone you'd want to draw in the first round like 18th seeded Paul-Henri Mathieu.

Always loved watching Kuerten play on clay.

This is his final tournament as he's retiring at the end of it, would be nice to see him string a few wins together, Mathieu has been in terrible for of late, but Kuerten has won three matches in the past four years so I dont see it happenings.

I couldn't resist, I put $5 on Kuerten paying $51 after he lost the first set.

If he somehow pulls off a flukey win (he's a set down but 4-4 in the 2nd) it'd be the greatest thing since Nelson Mandela's release from prison.

Go Marina!

Playing against Garbin tonight, only 20 ahead of her on the rankings and a "veteran". I reckon we'll have a Kiwi in the second round of a Grand Slam for the first time since...umm...err...

And her usual comeback is on, goes from 5-2 down to 5-4, back on serve. Just like her amazing win over Vera Zvonareva in Auckland. Crowd went mental, was an awesome day.

And Querrey's putting up a decent fight against Federer by the look of it.

Damn, Garbin takes the first set in a tiebreak, 11-9.

But Erakovic is a break up in the second, 3-0. C'mon Kiwi.

Stanislas Wawrinka is going to whip some ass this tournament. Quarters at the very least IMO.
Well, now his seed has gone out, so quarters not an outrageous tip.

Fairly obviously going to lay down and die against Feds tho. (Assuming Söderling doesn't crush him in round four - which again assumes he doesn't break down with a stupid injury against Capdeville.)

not convinced, been on the Wawrinka bandwagon for a couple of years but he's ranking is above his ability, had some good results in smaller tournaments and then obviously made the final of a masters series a few weeks back. He is very prone to a dead set shocker too often for mine. Will be gone before the fourth round.
