*Official* Sri Lanka Tour of South Africa 2019

I definitely don't think he should ever bat four in Test cricket. I can only see a place for him as a kind of specialist collapse-rescuer batting at six on juicy pitches. If five bowlers are selected (or four bowlers and Mulder) then Bavuma can't be part of the top five, IMO.
Agreed, he should never be a top 5 batsman, and one imagines Mulder will look to lock that down in the future.
He's never going to be anything more than a 35-averaged mediocre Test batsman.

Bavuma's team role shouldn't be as du Plessis' personal shield. If they're gonna go the five bowlers route and have Bavuma in the team then du Plessis has to bat four as he's better suited for it.

I agree with that. He is a number 5/6 in the mould of Cronje/Rhodes who often did rescue jobs but were never 100 'getters' at test level. They had added bows of being an extremely good leader/seam bowler and the best fielder in the world.

A hard choice needs to be made and I think it will only have to be made when we losing I feel.

Yeah Faf has to take some of the blame whenever this silly top five ordering happens, but to fair whenever Bavuma is asked where he'd like to bat he always says four. It's hard to feel too sorry for him batting "out of position" when he claims he's out of position whenever he's not batting there.

Hmm. Perhaps Bavuma is not the best judge of his own game then.

The problem is I don't think that you can talk about dropping Bavuma without raising an ugly word beginning with 'q'.

I think he tends to bat four in domestic cricket, which would be why he says he'd like to there, but it doesn't seem to work for him at test level.

It's a bit like how all the guys who bat 4-5 in county cricket seem best suited to 6-7 in test cricket, hence England's batting usually beginning there.

The fact that we needed another QDK score to rescue an innings shows how terrible we have been.

They may scramble to 200 but that’s still seriously under par, and that against a 10-man side. Imagine what strife they would be in if Sri Lanka had their frontline spinner. de Silva, a part-timer, is creating something every other over.

Looking forward to India then....

That may well happen again here and they will certainly get the losing feeling in India.

I think South Africa are placed quite well in this game. Sri Lanka would find it hard to chase 225 in the last innings.

He is getting it to dip quite well; both his wickets have come from deceiving the batsmen in the air.

When was the last series with a bigger gap between pre-series expectations and the actual on-field cricket
