This is dangerous. It would be very CA for them to go "this day/night Test only lasting 2.5 days has cost us a lot of money" and next year get them to make a road.
It wasn't a difficult pitch at any stage I thought. The bowling was simply good (except for Starc who was terrible) and the SL batting ill equipped.

I didn't say it was. But you just know this is the kind of thing that will make CA want to make sure the next Day/Night Test definitely lasts 5 days.

International 12th Man
Only possibility might be Burns, with others moving up, if they feel they need a 5th bowler. Canberra is usually pretty flat isn't it?

In four JLT Sheffield Shield matches in 2018-19, Stoinis has scored 298 runs at 42.57 with three half-centuries and 10 wickets at 25.20.
= "strong all-round form" for a batting all rounder batting 5 and bowling, at best, 5th for WA to include him as a bowling all-rounder for a Test.

wait would he be a bowling all-rounder? i thought he would play in the top 6 (and hence presumably not play). unless they're going to do something a bit wild like drop usman

"We made the decision to add Marcus to give us the flexibility to play an allrounder in the event the conditions require an extra bowling option in the line- up."
A bit ambiguous but I'm assuming they're considering dudding Khawaja and moving everyone up a spot to put him at 6. If Paine had any form with the bat, he'd probably bat at 7 but either way, considering he basically bowled out in all the ODI's, I'd say his bowling is what gets him the nod here, especially since he hasn't scored a Shield ton in almost 4 years.

"extra bowling option" = 5th bowler playing in top 6, no? like mmarsh was supposed to be.

tbf maybe i just count allrounders differently; i consider any all-rounder who bats in the top 6 a batting all-rounder.

Sure. It's a quibble over terms, though. As I said, in a strong-ish team, he'd be number 7 and picked as a bowling all-rounder. He'd only be at 6 by virtue of all the batting dross around him.

There's a possibility he'll slay a ton from 6 but considering where his game is at right now, it'll be a lovely bonus rather than why he was picked, if you know what I mean.

Yeah, has to be Khawaja who is under pressure to be replaced. Apart from that Pakistan Test, his form in the past 12 months has been an almost carbon copy of Shaun Marsh and for the umpteenth time this Test he failed against off-spin. Thought he solidified himself as an international player last summer but like a few others it proved to be a false dawn.

Thoroughly disagree with TC. They've picked him as a batsman who bowls. They want him to score bulk runs and bowl some tight overs if selected. They're not picking him expecting him to bowl 15+ overs a day and take 4fa.

International Regular
It makes sense for Australia to drop a batsman. The first choice Sri Lankan bowlers are falling like flies; their attack would be even more benign in the next test.

International Captain
While Patterson deserves his spot on shield form, he should have been in instead of Labuschagne. Poor Will has now been jumped by KP and could also be leap frogged by Stoinis

Once in a century batsman shouldn't be treated this way

It's going to be burns dropped for Stoinis if anyone is. His one failure in this test is absolutely enough in selectors minds to drop him and move on with life. And remember that he's already expendable since Warner is coming back for the next tests.

Next test:

Mediocre
Pillow
Lasagne
Concrete Feet
Mini Root
Worse than Marsh
No hundreds (c) (w/k)
Sir Patrick
Not Wasim
Goat
E.T.
