Is Dilhara good enough to play Tests or ODIs for that matter?
in terms of bowling I think Dilhara has much better chance of taking wickets than maharoof in test matches.

Dilhara Fernando is pretty average really, last time he came to New Zealand he looked pretty good, able to hit the deck and get some movement much like the typical New Zealand seamer. However he has never really kicked on and I think Maharoof's extra batting would be more beneficial to the Sri Lankan cause, and besides its not his fault he was underbowled by Jayawardene.

Agree with that whole heartedly.

NZ conditions need specialists, not half ****ed medium pacers who pass as allrounders in subcontinental conditions.

If SL do win the toss , I think they should do the smart thing this time and put NZ in and use whatever juice in the pitch first up.

I hope they don't make the same mistake twice.

I have noticed some mind games from various quarters reported in the media (you know who they are) suggesting Wellington pitch will turn quite early on etc..etc. possibly intended to suck the Sri Lankans again. I hope they are smart enough to know this .

I've heard the Basin Reserve being referred to as "a spinners graveyard" in a couple of papers which I thought was quite odd because it usually takes a little bit of turn, more so that most of the other pitches we prepare in New Zealand which usually suit the pace bowlers.

yeah, maharoof has the batting advantage but what's the guarantee he'll deliver. SL are better off with 7 specialist batsmen and 4 specialist bowlers.

Eden Park is the only ground here which has tended to help out spinners.

The Basin has tended to fluctuate in its characteristics over the years, but recently has tended to be harder and faster. I don't think there'll be much turn, but then Murali doesn't need it. Fleming made the point yesterday that he's actually way more dangerous when he's not turning it as much anyway.

From everything I've heard the pitch is gonna be a beauty. It'll be a little bouncy on day one, but after that it'll settle down and play like a dream on days 2 and 3. It's been beautiful weather in Wellington all week anyway, so there shouldn't be too much green on the pitch.

Anyone catch Flemo's remarks on TV 3 today? (Thursday)

Is it me, or was Flemo not way over the top - I lost a lot of respect for him in the course of those few minutes. I thought he was a better man and a bigger captain.

what did he say?

I may be overstating it - but from recollection he said:

1. The Sri Lankans are overplaying the Murali incident which is diverting attention away from NZ's victory and thus the Black Caps taking any credit from it.

2. Sanga should not have taken a single from the first ball of the over (which was his hundred run) as it was selfish (putting self before team) and may have led to the whole Murali thing too.

(and maybe a couple of other related comments that I cannot remember)

I am paraphrasing here and recollecting, so take what I say with a pinch of salt - but I think I have preserved the gist of Flemo's remarks.

Pretty poor form from Fleming.

He's obviously done it for a reason. I'm not convinced it was needed, the debate was starting to tail off but he's definately playing mind games.

It has also been reported through the media that the Black Caps are seething over the fact that the NZ public don't give them enough credit and I suppose Fleming is a little annoyed that the run-out took the gloss off a win.

Well they aren't called the 'black craps' for nothing! ;)

(I figured Flemo was going for mind games, but it is simply unnecessary especially given the fact that the debate was over, the media and public made more of an issue over it than the Sri Lankan team, and the fact that both teams usually have good relations. I expected more from him)

I think sometimes the team does deserve better. We rarely struggle at home and in ODIs we do quite well overseas. I think our test cricket could be better overseas but we always seem to come up against Australia in World Cups or Champions Trophys and really bomb badly..and it sets the team back with the fans.
