I wouldn't pin Patel's name into that squad yet. He needs to prove himself on a more consistent basis.

Sri Lanka really should have won that match. 79 runs off 20 overs with 6 wickets in hand, they should have done it comfortably, but something went wrong. And the NZ bowlers lead by Bond & Patel smartened up after some pretty poor bowling early on.

Good to see Bond hit 150 km's, he's pretty close to a full return now.

Patel does look like he gets a substanstial amount of turn which is great to see,

It was also pleasing to see him turn in a performance like that, particularly considering he got carted the previous day when he turned out for Wellington against Auckland.

The selectors should definately keep him in the frame for the West Indies series, there's no better opportunity to continue developing him at international level.

There's one more match in Napier tomorrow.

For the VB Series sake I hope Sri Lanka can put up a better fight with the bat.

Does anyone know the situation with Bond, Fleming and Styris? I just watched Sport365 and all are in doubt for the final ODI with injuries.

Bond - thigh
Fleming - groin
Styris - not sure

Bond will be missed , but the other 2 are struggling a bit and there not playing should not make a difference .

How is Fleming struggling. He scored 37 easily before getting himself out and that was on the back of a domestic hundred.

I hope Bond plays, it would be good if he could get through a whole series.

Yeah, I mean, Stryis guiding NZ to the largest ever run chase just three innings ago was a bit ho hum, really, eh?

In his 2 ODI innings in this series against SL he has not scored much and has not looked to do so either.

That was what I was alluding to. But I take your point he can be a match winner under different circumstances.

Fleming's innings at Welligton was not an innings of someone in form. There were several nicks and edges and few instances of ball rapping on pad. Given the time he has been away from cricket with surgery and birth of child , this is understandable and given Windies tour starts soon , he needs every opportunity he can get to get into some form

This is what I meant. Not that he is struggling as such , but that he is definitely not in good nick as yet.

that was against a weakened bowling attack.

For SL thing looks even more gloomier and Moody has to be kicked out. The Team lacks confidance and he cannot seem to inspire his players to perform.

Atapattu must also give up his Captaincy . SL needs a confidant and sharp Captain who can capitalise on the few opportunities they get and Unfortunately Atapattu looks like a guy who will mess up even the simplest of opportunities.

This Coaching/Captaincy combination seems to have lot of bad luck as well as indicated by not only the losing streak in Tests and ODIs but also Atapattu's toss losing sequence .
They both seem to be not having any luck at all and that is all the more reason to expedite this double change.

Moody is not upto the job at International llevel, along with several of the players, and while unfortunately we cannot afford to get rid of some of them because not enough talent is available in reserve to replace them, We certainly can get rid of the Over-paid coach (who BTW gets paid far far more than Murali, Atapattu, or Sngakkara alone or combined :D ).

And whats more the buffoons at SL Cricket have thrown more money on getting an expensive Overseas Assistant Coach as well.

Those idiots seem to think throwing money on expensive losers(coaches) is the remedy and not spending that money on Grassroots cricket in SL so that future generations of Sri Lankans can be priviledged by a SL Tendulkar or a SL Lara or a SL McGrath discovered in the future.
It's true, luck has deserted us. The whole Jayasuriya saga illustrates that much.

I don't think Moody is entirely blame, it’s hardly his fault if the players can't put what they do off the field on the field, and this buckling under pressure is hardly anything new to SL cricket. If you let Moody go, who till take over? A lot of people think that hiring an international coach is sort of a status thing, like having an Aussie in there will make us play better. While there is some truth to that (more like visions of 96 8-) ) but a more realistic explanation is that our own coaches can be far more susceptible to influence by the climate the surrounds Sri Lankan Cricket.

The other blame has to lie with the Sri Lankan Cricket Board for consistently poor selection and for being far too lenient on poor performances. Look at all these teams who have turned their cricketing woes around in the last 12 or so months (India, England South Africa namely), what has been the main difference between those teams and ours? The willingness to put through young players and persisting with them for enough of a period that you know they have what it takes or not. We just need 1 batsman that will hold together this batting line up and we could be competitive. I don't understand why the selectors were so willing to hold Mubarak's hand for the last 5 years and Avishka's for the last decade, and why they continue to hold Maharoof's hand after his last few years of indifference is beyond me. Bring in some new blood for crying out loud!!!!!!!! If it doesn't work it won't change much, we'll still be loosing, except we just would no longer be nursing the tried and tested garbage of Sri Lanka cricket, we would have found a entirely new variety of garbage altogether.

I agree Attapatu is slipping, for one his captaincy is very complacent, I mean he is like 3 over behind on everything. But who takes over? I don't know if Vaas is captain material because I don’t know how good a Cricketing brain he has. Sangakarra is the logical choice but do we want to add the pressure on the guy who can barely handle the job of keeping and batting? I think it’s safe to say nothing is going to happen on that front until 2007.

I also agree that the bigger problem, the root of this problem and the solution lies in our grass-roots cricket. Sri Lankan Cricket is a political mess; everyone’s got their hand in something or another. This increasing the number of teams in domestic competition business and scrapping the relegation system isn't going to help any either. And with Arjuna quitting the committee, the future is very bleak.

Kiwis what are the chances of Astle coming back into the team in time for the WC?, i reckon his experience once he hits form would be invaluable.

What do you mean Styris is struggling on the basis of this series? He scored a very useful 28 in the chase at Christchurch, and he looked good in Wellington before he holed out. Some of your posts are very baffling. Fleming was in good touch I thought, he hit the pacemen with authority. You must be a crazy man if you think having Fleming AND Styris out of the Black Caps won't make much of a difference.

Who the hell is the NZ SuperSub? I'm dead certain I heard Fleming say at the toss that PETER FULTON is the SS, but Nisbett just said that Martin is the SS and he has been subbed on for How. I am confused....

Tim

Martin just isn't up to ODI standard. He's bowling at least 1 four ball every over...he's got to be able to put some pressure on but he always seems to concede 40+ runs.

And i'd add James Franklin to that, although considering Mills has improved..Franklin may just need regular ODI cricket to come right.
