Just saw the scorecard a few minutes ago, couldn't believe Dhoni made 183*! That's crazy, and I just know we're never going to hear the end of it, either. :p
...and neither should we, if it was as good as initial reports indicate.

this win give me the feeling that Ganguly won't get a chance to comeback in the series, unless IND has already won the series and they want to rest "key" players..

He was also missed by Dhoni...a stumping chance that he fumbled.
It was also an inside edge if I am not mistaken. It was a caught behind AND a stumping chance. But of course, he has more than gained absolution, right.;) :D

WOW. Honestly, This is one of the best knocks I have ever seen, and that is without taking into account the 50 overs of keeping in hot Rajasthan weather. Here is the situation... A target of 299 on a pitch which everyone believed would go slower and lower as the day progressed (perhaps it did, perhaps it didn't, hard to say after such an amazing knock :D ), India are renowned for being amongst the worst chasers in the world, Sri Lanka are the #2 ODI side in the world who have two of the most successful ODI bowlers ever in Vaas and Murali, Sachin gone in the first over itself and with a very susceptible middle order to follow, DHONI plays the knock of his life. Man, I take back my word that he was just a HITTER. He still struggles to score off certain types of deliveries, but really, he never misses anything in his zone and that more than compensates for those dot balls.

That's what I can't believe. The durability of these keepers.

First Sangakkara bats out the whole 50 overs in the first innings, and then keeps all day against India, and then Dhoni does the same in a different order (batted almost 50 overs seeing as he came out to bat in the first over and batted the rest of the innings, not quite 50 overs because he got India to the target quicker than needed :P). It's frickin' amazing.

How can he keep all day and then hit 10 sixes? Its crazy.

This fellow is a 'jaat'.

Jaats are a community in northern India who are strong big and also simple-minded who believe in getting things done by rough and ready methods rather than by finnesse and style.

The term jaat is used for people who take similar apprach to anything in life irrespective of whether they are born into the jaat community or not.

So as I said, he is a jaat. It shows in his manner/mannerisms and his methods at the crease MOST OF THE TIME .

BUT...
..he is a jaat who, if he gave up a bit of his jaat-buddhi (thinking like a jaat) could become a very different player altogether. Kapil was a jaat by birth and in his attitude when he came to international cricket but he changed over time and became a thinking bowler and polished his batting very considerably.

We should expect the same from Dhoni. If it does happen, all those who have condemned him as just another slogger will have another think coming.

whoa 183, dalm Dhoni when i left for school for this morning he was smooking his way to 50 but i didn't expect this geez, he could have scored a double if SRI had made about 25 more runs.

Drifting off topic, i dont know what you Indian think about Dhoni has a test match keeper, but i think he should be given a shot, ya never know he could have the same kind of impact Gilchrist has for Australia...

WEll, I suppose after this kind of knock, he deserves a shot at test cricket, but I am still slightly sceptical about him in the test match arena, mainly because he still has loose ends as a keeper and on days when his batting doesn't go too well, he will cost India a lot and with our dependence on spinners, we rely very heavily on good keepers to get our wins in test cricket. Ideally, I still think Dhoni for ODIs and Kaarthick for tests is still a goo choice, but like I said earlier, he deserves a shot in Test cricket after this knock.

well from my 8 years of watching cricket i think it is, the only other big score i remember a batsman scoring heavily in a chase Bevan's innings vs Asia in that unofficial ODI game in 2000 :p ,oh Tendulkar had 140 odd vs Australian in Sharjah in 98

Question: Is this is the highest ever score by a batsman in a chasing side in a 50 over game?
Yes.

The previous record was Brian Lara's 153 at Sharjah in November 1993, when the West Indies chased 285 to win.

This really messes up my player of the month article now. Dhoni, Tendulkar or Hayden?

If u want my objective opinion, I think it should be Sachin. His impact has been more than in terms of just runs.

Dhoni is definitely knocking on the door for test selection, BUT I do worry about his keeping ability. As Honest said, we rely so heavily on spinners in the test arena, we can't afford a keeper who has loose ends with his technique. Karthik is the man for now IMO, maybe in a year or so Dhoni can get his keeping up to scratch.

Why not Ganguly ? More has been said and written of him this month than of any other player :D

It's what I'm tending to at the moment - the impact of his return, and his scoring like the old Sachin. I just wish he'd made the 183 today rather than getting out for two, that would have really made things easy... any other ideas, guys?

I'd go with Dhoni.

Today's knock is an immense achievement, as unlikely as a Rikki Clarke ton

/looking forward to some serious Clarkewatching next season
