Hopeful SL Team:

1. Atapattu
2. Jayasuriya
3. Sangakkara
4. Jayawardene
5. Tharanga
6. Vandort
7. Dilshan
8. Bandara
9. Vaas
10. Fernando
11. Muralitharan
This assuming Jayasuriya reverses his decision to retire from Test cricket?

Dilshan is awful.

Is he? I always thought he was a very good cricketer and his form of late in test cricket has been most impressive. He do well in England if you ask me.

I meant who were likely to play. Therefore I excluded Atapattu.

Jayawardene is alright, but nothing special. Dilshan is awful.
Dilshan certainly isn't awful. He's not the best, no, but he's certainly capable of playing some good innings.
Jayawardene tends to be excellent at home and pretty poor away - never just "all right".

No point in Tharanga and Vandort (both openers) batting in the middle-order.

this wouldprobably be the line up for the first test:
1. Vandort
2. Atapattu (if fit, else Tharanga)
3. Sanga
4. Mahela
5. Thilan
6. Dilshan
7. Maharoof
8. Vaas
9. Lasith
10. Murali
11. Kulasekara

hmm just read this article, looks like both Vandort and Tharanga will both play and the useless one will get a holiday to England.
That's bad news for Sri Lanka.

I wonder if the SL selectors can convince Sanath to play this series in England in the light of Atapattu's injury . Its better than having 2 inexperienced guys at the top of the order (in seamy conditions of early Summer in England) with a brittle line up.

In light of Atapattu's injury , I would be very surprised if SL pick Maharoof , Vaas, Malinga and Kulasekera.

I suspect SL will have to play an extra batsman or Bandara instead of Kulasekera. More likely an extra batter.

Likely line up therefore -

1. Vandort
2. Tharanga
3. Sanga
4. Mahela
5. Thilan
6. Dilshan
7. Kapugedera
8. Maharoof
9. Vaas
10. Murali
11. Malinga

If Harmison's not going to make it then it looks like a lot depends on how Simon Jones comes through his two games for Glamorgan. If he can't find form, or worse gets injured, we might find ourselves with an attack of Hoggard, Anderson, Plunkett, Flintoff and Udal.

I'm not sure about that one.

As a medic and despite not being a specialist on back injuries , I have little doubt that if Atapattu does undergo Back Surgery as Tony Simsek has suggested, that would definitely be the end of his career .

As far as I know very few people recover well enough after back operations to play sport !!

Which is why surgery for back problems are usually the last resort and only a means of relieving pain and recovering mobility and not a means of recovering well enough to participate in sport.
