I'm sure various combos of Gooch, Atherton, Smith, Thorpe & Stewart during the 90smay have qualified.

Hmm, anything recent?
You have noticed how rubbish England were in the 80s and 90s haven't you? :p

Robin Smith had the highest average of any Englishmen in the 90s I believe (will need checking) and his average was 43.67.

I wonder how often they played together. And I'm not sure that Athers ever averaged over 40 anyway.

And he's out. D'oh.

Oh well, at least Freddie might actually use his bat now.
Nope, he's gone too.
Actually, if our last 3 go quickly and SL manage 300 second time around, this isn't going to be as easy as we've all been thinking.

I reckon all 5 only played 3 tests together - the 3rd, 4th & 5th tests against Aus in 1993. At that stage of their careers, Athers & Stewart both averaged about 36.

And another great innings by Jones.

Meanwhile on TMS, Selvey (I think) is commenting on the prospects of SL making about 300 in the 2nd innings to set an awkard target. You heard it here first .....

Mahmood and Panesar at the crease. Ah, a partnership of batting giants.

It's almost like seeing Lara and Tendulkar at the crease at the same time.

Another Fifer for Murali. what a champion !! Single handedly holding England. Hopefully SL batsmen can put some decent score in the second innings.
