ok neil, whats with the hostile tone man, I wasnt xhallenging anybody, so chill

coming to the main point, wat shud be eng's primary motive tomorrow? shud they try and do something by atleast setting sl two sessions and half? or shud they opt for some bat practise for morgan and prior and even broad?

I think if weather bites away much of the morning session then eng wud settle for the latter.

It's almost besides the point as it's going to rain again tomorrow, and there's no need to run three bowlers into the ground going for a win that isn't there. May as well try and boss the game as much as possible and keep them in the field.

1. We lead by 91 currently

2. So we smack another 60 runs in 10 overs then declare, giving us an outside chance of victory

3. The rain comes down, and everyone wonders why we bothered giving another Test to Cardiff

England should absolutely look to win the game initially, therefore if, and it is a big if, play gets underway at the scheduled time, we should bat for maybe a limited time scoring as quickly as possible or declare overnight, and try and get into SL. Can't see the weather playing ball though, and think it may be batting practice in the afternoon.

Since January 2005, there have been 32 instances of teams batting for more than 140 overs in the first innings and scoring more slowly than England's 3.209, currently set in Cardiff: Statsguru.

South Africa: 9
Australia: 5
India: 4
Pakistan: 4
West Indies: 4
England: 2
New Zealand: 2
Sri Lanka: 2

It's a right pain in the arse when facts get in the way, isn't it?

Geez when I was a kid anything over 3 an over was lightning, and i'm not that old. I remember suffereing a day watching David Boon accumulate runs for Australia at OT, now that was soporific.
AWTA, seems to be a recent phenomenon to criticize every drawn match as a bore and a blight on Test cricket. Thought Test cricket fans were supposed to be patient and all that. I want bowlers to earn their wickets, and if they can't do that, a draw is fair enough. Much rather that than every game having a result due to sloppy, impatient batting and batsmen who don't have the patience to construct a long Test innings (looking at Pakistan here).

TBH it was less the RR itself but the defensive nature of the game that got up my nerves. It just seemed to lack any and all intensity.

I guess it's annoying that the SL bowlers adopted defensive tactics, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. They have to play in the way that gives them the best possible chance in the series and if it involves playing for a draw here, so be it.

NZ also had a dull series with India last year, with two matches being drawn on flat pitches. It's tough viewing at times but you can't expect batsmen to give their wickets away just for the sake of excitement. The lack of enough world-class bowlers (who can make the pitch irrelevant) right now is more of a concern.

Game over I'm afraid. There's a big band of wet weather sweeping across the country at the moment. Even if it passes by 11 and even if there's nothing coming behind it, it will delay play until the outfield dries. Definitely nothing before lunch I'd say sand probably worse.

Useful batting practice if nothing else.

Got to say the Sri Lankan attack looks worse that Somerset ladies second eleven.

reckon England will collapse to Mendis atleast once though he needs a pitch that gives him the fizz of the track.
