Jon Trott is proving an outstanding number three for England, and I will openly admit to having my doubts about him in the early stages of his Test career and prior to that. I couldn't quite put my finger on why I wasn't so keen on him, there were no obvious major deficiencies, yes he has a tendency to work it through the legside that was highlighted when he wasn't scoring as heavily, but I just didn't take to his style. Maybe early on I couldn't quite work out what his actual style was.
Now everyone knows his method. He's not a fantastically attractive strokeplayer, maybe that was my problem with him initially, but he is superbly effective. He accumulates his runs, has an unflappable temperament about him, and is a great timer of the ball. His focus is at times reported as a negative, he goes too far into his own bubble and maybe doesn't appreciate the match situation as well as he should, but that single-mindedness is certainly a positive aswell and it shows in his hunger and selfish greed to score runs aplenty and not get bored, he rarely gifts his wicket away.
I've really grown to enjoy Trott for what he is, and the fact he really can go on and become one of the very best in the world, if he isn't already. His stats may not be quite as impressive in two years time, but I am seriously enjoying him while he's in such terrific nick. His placement through the legside today was superb, and his game is in great order.
I am certainly a Trott-believer, and let's hope for another successful summer.
