*** Official *** South African Domestic Season 2019/20

It’s a big worry.
As is Paterson being one of the leading seamers. He could obviously go on to prove us wrong, but he's been rather ineffective in this match so far, yet you can't really say that his selection was unreasonable if you're looking at domestic performances this season.

Smuts taking 22 wickets tells you everything about the quality of cricket on show. Worst I can recall. Big knock from Bavuma but any international batsman should be reeling off hundreds against these attacks. It’s a big worry.
The pitches may have also played a role. Basically 3 games of wickets & 3 games of zero wickets.

Kimberley (Knights)
7-160 (Smuts) = 22.86
7-227 (other spinners : de Klerk/Ntuli/von Berg) = 32.43
24-589 (seamers) = 24.54

East London (Lions)
0-31 (Smuts)
3-111 (other spinners : Phangiso, Fortuin) = 37.00
33-576 (seamers) = 17.45

Port Elizabeth (Titans)
5-81 (Smuts) = 16.20
9-210 (other spinners : Shamsi/Brand) = 23.33
18-772 (seamers) = 42.89

Newlands (Cobras)
0-49 (Smuts)
11-372 (other spinners : Linde/Piedt/de Klerk) = 33.81
12-481 (seamers) = 40.08

Kingsmead (Dolphins)
10-167 (Smuts) = 16.70
14-382 (other spinners : Muthusamy/Subrayen/de Klerk) = 27.29
4-416 (seamers) = 104.00

Centurion (Titans)
0-78 (Smuts)
3-212 (other spinners : Shamsi/de Klerk) = 70.67
27-809 (seamers) = 29.96

As an out-and-out fast bowler who would have wanted to bowl on these pitches that Dupavillon has this season ? Amazing how he is even up there. The stats above when looked into deeper are so impressive. Especially coming back from an injury and then getting another injury during the Bloem game.

Centurion (Titans)
4-135 (Dupavillon) = 33.75
26-830 (other seamers) = 31.92
5-212 (spinners) = 42.40

Bloemfontein (Knights)
2-37 (Dupavillon) = 18.50
14-560 (other seamers) = 40.00
8-470 (spinners) = 58.75

Kingsmead (Warriors)
0-91 (Dupavillon)
4-325 (other seamers) = 81.25
24-549 (spinners) = 22.88

Oudtshoorn (Dolphins)
2-45 (Dupavillon) = 22.50
8-196 (other seamers) = 24.50
28-517 (spinners) = 18.46

Pietermaritzburg (Lions)
5-60 (Dupavillon) = 12.00
8-441 (other seamers) = 55.13
22-487 (spinners) = 22.14

I hope he stays injury free for a good while now... deserves the chance at international.

Outside chance now?
Unlikely. They seem to have their people in the queue already. It needs an A tour to challenge that queue.

I was thinking if he impresses in the 50-over comp - maybe a spot in the 50-over side ? But it will be very tough.

For some reason, for me anyway - it always seems worse watching your team struggle to take wickets than at batting

I think that is a SA supporter thing... we had years of not great batting before, but our bowlers suffering has been few and far between...

* Lehan Botha is reserve middle order batsmen for the SA u19 WC squad
** Pieterse was only 17 year-old batsman with the current SA u19 group in prelim squads

(others of interest : Slade van Staden (16) [KZN Inland/Dolphins], Nonelela Yikha (18) [Border/Warriors], Kai Curran (17) [Western Province/Cobras], Nicholas Hatton (16) [KZN Inland/Dolphins], Andile Simelane (16) [KZN Inland/Dolphins], Nicholas Keevy (17) [Eastern Proince/Warriors] + Titans/Cobras never have 16 year-olds so watch out for Michael Levitt (WP/Cobras) & Dewald Brevis (Northerns/Titans)

Leading wicket-takers (age) wickets @ average @ economy

Seamers

1. Liam McCarthy (17) 11 @ 15.5 @ 4.68 (Gauteng/Lions)

8. Siya Plaatjie (18) 4 @ 30.00 @ 4.00 (Western Province/Cobras)

* Plaatjie was reserve quick for SA u19 WC squad
** Not sure on the 17 year-old fast-bowlers (haven't seen McCarthy but Fourie is a big boy) - I do like the 2 16 year-olds though. Wirey and skiddy speed - Jacobs and Stephenson.

Spinners

1. Ruan Cronje (18) 15 @ 10.5 @ 3.27 (Free State/Knights)
2. Lehan Botha (18) 7 @ 11.6 @ 4.76 (Western Province/Cobras)

6. Nicholas Keevy (17) 5 @ 22.40 @ 4.00 (Eastern Province/Warriors)

* Cronje, Meyer and Keevy wrist-spinners

As I was saying Stephen. EP won Coke Week. Think some of the talent coming from there is some of the most exciting as they quite young and performing.

Obviously Beaufort/van Heerden have a chance but need to improve their consistency. Really liked the look of the wrist-spinner Aiden Meyer too.

Next cycle for EP

1. Jade Smith
2. James Mullins
3. Nicholas Keevy
4. George van Heerden
5. Joshua Stephenson

If they allowed him to play in the WC then nothing is on the horizon.

Connor McKerr was pulled from the squad in 2016 when they found out he signed for Surrey.

Would they (assume you mean CSA) necessarily have been aware? Is there some sort of requirement to inform... other than not being a dick.

Not sure but I guess there would be a trust within the group.

I have been following Bird on social media. This WC has been a massive focus of his and has been super excited to wear the green and gold.

Thought it also odd WP cricket had meeting s with his parents to confirm his commitment.

No doubt he has had offers. As a young player probably wants to play for the Proteas. Although I can also see parents encouraging him to head overseas though... take opportunities, look after your future etc. Difficult choices for a young man.

Looking for some big plays this week. Just worried about the shite weather in EL and Durban for the games potentially.
