i wouldnt bet against browne getting a ton on this pitch
If he's ever going to get one you'd think now would be the time. I think Chanderpaul might at least pretend to be going for a result here, even though it is patently impossible. Maybe another 100-150 runs then a declaration. Though it's more likely that South Africa would get out for 15 at Headingley than 150 here.

yeah exactly, this is the time and place. there is no point pace bowlers turning up to antigua, i would just bowl spinners and part time bowlers:

1) to pass time
2) for a bit of enjoyment
3) to speed up the process of the inevitabilities
4) and why not

So let me get this straight, Gayle's 312 is a mockery because of the flat pitch, yet it's almost an identical strip to that Lara batted on for his 400 and that's not a problem?
Lara's inning

1. English bowling was much better in the inning compared to the South African bowling even though South Africa really tried hard.
2. Much more pride was at stake after being devastated by England in the earlier tests.

Because being down 0-2 in a 4-Test series is much better than being down 0-3...
It would be pretty pathetic if the Windies lost 4-0. The 400 helped them feel a bit of pride come back when all seemed lost and no light at the end of the tunnel being down 3-0.

Far from suggesting Gayle was was the worst player ever to score a Test triple century, I was simply asking the question.

Yes you could say Gayle has had a much longer and more successful Test career than Sandham, but one should not forget that the Surrey man did not get much of a chance to really prove himself at the highest level as the legendary Hobbs & Sutcliffe made the English opening slots their own, and in doing so formed statistically the greatest opening partnership of all time. If Gayle was faced with such a predicament, he too would not have had the opportunity to really prove himself and of course Sandham enjoyed a highly distinguished career with Surrey.
I'm afraid that this defence of Sandham simply doesn't work. He actually played 10 Test before the Saga Holidays tour to WI in 1929-30, including an entire series in South Africa. He managed to average a princely 19.13 in those Tests, and he wasn't the reserve for H&S after 1925, since the record shows it was Percy Holmes.

Sandham is certainly my vote for the worst-ever triple centurion.

Cheers,

Mike

Pretty damn good bowlers if you ask me! Gilchrist and Atkinson opening the bowling, Valentine as the spinner, and I hear that Sobers fellow wasn't a mug either. Amazing innings, and under the toughest match circumstances of them all, I should say.

Best triple century would probably have to be Bradmans 334. Facing some teriffic bowlers, with the series tied at 1-1 and as a 21 year old, hitting 300 by stumps on day one is simply astonishing.
It is also the only time the world record individual score has been broken against a full-strength Test class attack on something other than a shirtfront.

Cheers,

Mike

Bob Cowper also deserves a mention in this discussion.
I'm not quite sure why, since I thought the idea was to finger relatively poor players who had got triple tons. Bob Cowper was anything but a poor player.

I've just been watching the first-session highlights. I think AB de V was actually getting a bit of reverse swing! Is there nothing this man can't do?!? :D

Can't quite see how, though. If Bravo gets out to a stupid shot as he's wont to do, I can't see anyone who's good enough to make a ton - unless of course WI get bowled out and Smith make a quickfire century.
There's the 8 centuries and the record then. Nice to see Kallis out-flat-track-bullied yesterday.

Golden-arm Boucher does the trick! Bravo goes for 107. Spoons a wide long-hop to cover!

All 11 players bowling in a test innings; that can't have happened too many times! I bet 2 wicket keepers taking wickets in the same test innings must be a first too!
