***Official*** South Africa in Sri Lanka

Yeah, Langelveldt did go a little too far with the 'mediocre' comment - though he did have a deci-point when comparing Mahela to the other batsman in that list.

Though come to that, I think Mahela loses out only in comparison to Lara, Sobers, Hutton, Bradman, Hutton and Inzamam in that list - not a bad bunch of batsmen to come second best to. I certainly think him better than Taylor or Jayasuriya, or even for that matter - *chuckles* - Hayden, and he is certainly better than Simpson and Sandham and Foster.

Mahela is not a great batsman - though he has the potential to be one. It may be now that a combination of age, experience and the captaincy is guiding him towards that promised land. Time will tell. I hope so though.

Murali has 2 got more ...now Gibbs gone, off a full toss. Wont help gibbs's Average that! his Average against Sri Lanka is woeful.

SL win by an innings and 153 runs. Murali gets 6 .

Next Test at Tamil Union grounds. I hope SL pick Lokuaararatchchi , who seems to be a better wicket taker lately or Bandara . Am not sure about Herath .

Well played Sri Lanka, the better team won.
SA will be strengthened by Pollocks return to the Team for the next Test . Gibbs may get chopped +/- Amla, one feels .

Is that a new test venue ?

434 must be one of the highest scores in the third innings of a test to lose a Test.
Without checking, a couple of 4th innings that may come close would be NZ's 1st test in England in 1973 (possiby Trent Bridge) and Aus at Old Trafford in 1981. Neither of those were innings defeats though. Oh, and NZ's first test at home to England in 2001/02 when Astle made that 200.

EDIT
440, 402 and 451 respectively. Looks like NZ are the world's best at huge final innings totals to lose a match.

A guy scores 374 in a Test , a chanceless knock at that , and you called him a mediocre cricketer !!

As if that wasn't the stupidest statement made, you now dare to call him an Anonymous batsman !!
By SA standards of Match fixing (of Hansie Cronje and others) and ball tampering he may not be Notorious , but anonymous he is not . If you have a problem with your vocabuulary (I suspect Africaaner being your native tongue and English an alien language to you ) , its better you check the words you use before posting .

I know you must be hurting from the SL record partnership , but the fault lies in your Team selections and people who hide away from touring feigning injury for fear their averages might struggle (You know damn well who they are) or they cannot do with another lean patch !! (which would mean they will have to be kicked out for good from your team:) )
But its pretty poor to belittle or down play an achievement which is worthy of any Test Cricketer. (You may take note that not a Single South African has got past 300 in Test Cricket , IIRC ) (Mediocrity and underperformance are not a hall mark of SL as shown by our World Cup win in 1996 and when we knocked you guys out in 2003 !!:) )
Bravo!

Geez, calm down - he made a quite valid point - if you think of the greats of this period, Jayawardene isn't likely to spring to mind for quite a while if you're honest is he?

In fact, I don't think he would be in most peoples' top ten, though perhaps that might be changing.

I would add that Hutton & Sobers weren't exactly legends before they broke the individual innings records either, both being very early in their test careers.

Who knows what Jayawardene will go on to achieve? He's been in masterful form lately, so maybe we're seeing a Waugh/Gooch-like stepping up a couple of gears after a relatively ordinary career to date.

Thats a good point. Its really hard to say where his career will go. Perhaps one day our grandchildren will ask us to tell them stories of the great Jayawardene, or not. :)

Seriously though, he could go on from this to move towards the top of the current tree occupied at the moment by the likes of Inzi, Dravid, Kallis and Ponting

After a bit of homework, it transpires that Hutton averaged 29.5 before hitting 364 in his 6th test. Sobers averaged 34 in 16 tests before hitting 365. You can imagine the sour comments about these ordinary players taking advantage of absolute roads to outscore true greats like Foster & Sandham..

Even Lara had only one big hundred before his 375, didn't he?
