AB, sure does not like the 90s. I believe it is the fourth time he has now been dismissed on such totals.

Ntini out for 13. 5 wicket haul for Murali.
SA all out for 361, a good total thanks to some good batting form Prince, De Villiers and Pollock.

That's brilliant performance from South Africa, as i predicted Devillers and Amla doing well.. Really surprised to see Prince playing well against spin too.. altho murali got him in the end..

i really like AB Devillers, he is a nice positive player and so far he has been backing up everything he has said. Unlucky to miss the 100, i wasnt sure if he edged it or the bat hit the ground. SA should think of moving him up the order and move vaas's bunny (Gibbs) to the middle order.

I think they should continue to keep Prasanna in the side because he does make things easier on Sangakkara. I don't think he could have made all those runs in the first test if he had had to keep wickets on day one as well. And as for Prasanna's wicket keeping standards we should keep in mind that Sangakkara had a lot of problems as a keeper when he started out as well. But look how good he is now. Prasanna will improve.

Welcome StumpMic ... from another newbie. :) Absolutely agree about Sangakkara, after all Alec Stewart's record was a lot better when he played as a batsman.

I can understand the argument for Sanga to play as a keeper/batsman but now that Sri Lanka's batting is looking better (though time will really tell) it may be unnecessary.

If, however, Sanga is to return to his keeper/batsman role I do believe he should be coming in at 5/6/7. Certainly not at no.3 which is imo too high and too early for him to come in as a batsman - especially if he has just been keeping.

Who then to play at no.3? I believe Mahela's natural spot is no.4 and him coming in too high will be counter-productive - also I like the idea of combining Mahela at 4. with Sanga at 5. say. In this case, Marvans return (hopefully) may fix it as he may be an ideal no.3.
(This is of course if Sanga is to don the keepers gloves again)

IF SL top order continue to bat well and post big scores, everyone will remain positive re Prasanna J as keeper. But the moment the Top order start struggling and the Middle order need to put some runs on the board the pressure will be on, and Prasanna J will be the first to be chopped for this purpose .

If SL lose this Test , then the selectors folly of playing Prasanna J as a specialist keeper will come under fire !!

IMO , Prasanna J does deprive SL the chance of playing the extra spinner , who may be the difference between a win and a draw , especially when Murali struggles too , or has to trundle out 50-60 overs !!

I suspect this is the selectors trialling out Prasanna J to see if it affects Team performance, Sanga's performance as a batter etc . Once they find it makes no difference or affects the Team's batting potential , they will hopefully revert back to the status quo .

Perhaps at the request of Sangakkara?

For all the work of (Mahela) Jayawardene lately, Sangakkara is still clearly Sri Lanka's best batsman IMO. It's a lot of work to bear such a burden, bat at number 3, AND have to keep as many overs as he would tend to have to with the Sri Lankan bowling attack.

Factor in too that he's 'keeping to Muralitharan and guys like Malinga.

Iam sure i mentioned this earlier somewhere in this thread, Dilshan and Tharanga are both keepers for their club side. SL is thus playing 4 keepers in this side. Dilshan bats in the lower order averages about 30 with the bat, makes a useful 50 when SL are in touble, but rarely converts this to a match winning 100. In my view i find that an ideal keeper. Also i have seen P. Jaya bat and the guy sucks, this was a few years ago and the general view in SL is that he has improved his batting.

Don't glove skills come into it at all then?!

Which is why the best keeper in SL (Sangakkara) should continue to keep.

I do not see the keeping affecting his batting provided he drops down to 4 or 5 .

If anything, whenever he keeps, his confidance is greater and that only helps his batting .

Not much to go by, but he does average 37.33 more runs per innings (78.57 to 41.24) when he doesn't keep wicket.

I say not much to go by though, as he has only played 22 innings as a batsman alone.

Ntini seems to be have started off beautifully on the second morning . Tharanga goes - early wicket . 1/28
