oh of course, Pollock has been brilliant anyway thus far.
He's been the sole bowler of the series really to be so consistent.
But he hasn't taken a wicket. That's crucial.

he shares something in common with the great curtly ambrose in the twilight of his career...very economical but no wickets unless of course they play in england and the ball is seaming all over the place

Not as crucial in ODI's.
Oh yes it is.

A main reason for our last 2 or 3 ODIs wins are Papps and Fleming getting us off to a great start. That gives a foundation for the bigger hitters.

I have to say I've been disappointed in Nel though. How people were talking about him becoming a genuine great I have no idea yet. All I've seen so far is an ungainly action, tomcat-like control, little or no movement, manageable pace, etc.
I think Andre craves a bouncy home pitch, with a big crowd supporting him...

In the SA v WI series he had all the makings of becoming a star.. anyone who saw that would probably agree...

Maybe its consistancy problems , burnout or something else... But I think he has the ability to come back strongly and prove you wrong...

Weather forecast for the upcoming weekend: R-A-I-N.

Which means this 5th ODI will unlikely be played.

Which means NZ will win the series.

And play all sorts of silly buggas in the 6th ODI.

You know, they could actually do worse than play Taylor and Wilson if there's a dead rubber, with the English tri-series in mind. Our cupboard looks pretty full at the moment, but you never know when someone could get an injury.

If nothing else it would add a bit of life to a pretty flat mid-week game.

While Nel is a fine Test bowler and will only improve, I don't see him ever becoming an excellent ODI bowler, because at this stage he doesn't seem to have the required discipline. If a batsman goes after him he tries to blast them out, which isn't really the way to go in ODI cricket.

Yes, and a midweek game being played at 12pm as well!

It's such a disgrace that the only weekend game of the series will be rained out.

Why the hell did they not play the Friday games on Saturday?

All signs were suggesting a sell-out at Eden Park tommorow...but I see absolutely no chance with the storm thats coming in.

That means that NZ will win the series, in a rather disappointing fashion but still they probably deserve it at this stage.

No, you don't just give away caps to players for a dead-rubber...surely NZ should be encouraging players to work hard to get into the team rather than just being given a game because it won't have an effect on the series.

NZ needs to play these guys continuously for them to be able to gel better...sure players like Astle & Bond will return but I see no need to throw in Taylor & Wilson when the mix is working well.

Taylor will get his chance, there's no doubt about that..but we don't need to force him into the side when things are going well.

I hope he gets picked for the England tour, he might get a few matches over there.

Mingster - The administrators decided the "target demographic" would rather watch David Bowie (in the end he was in a different city), and the first 2 rounds of the Super 12. Casual ODI fans will take a day's leave for the cricket, right?

The Simpsons have parodied boardroom discussions like that one must've been...

I'm sorry, but caps schmapps IMO.

On their own, ODI's are still just fun, contrived games. Australia and India took that approach in arguably the 2nd most prestigious one-day tournament in the world. European soccer teams always rotate line-ups to suit the game's importance.

If Taylor ends up playing 152 ODIs rather than 151, who's really going to care? If anything it could actually boost NZ's chances rather than weaken them, with a young guy on edge usually better than another guy just going through the motions.

Styris for one has nothing more to prove in terms of influencing this series, and as someone who says he doesn't give a rat's about averages etc. will probably just play a carefree innings anyway.

While I prefer Tests, I take ODIs equally seriously. It's not just light entertainent as far as I'm concerned, and I think they should continue with the same team in a dead rubber situation. It's been a while since NZ have had any sort of batting stability and general momentum and they'd be fools to screw with it now.

When you're not playing another one-dayer for 4 months, is stability and momentum really relevant?

Anyway, I've really just been flying a kite with this. It's never going to happen, and I see Taylor should get two decent bats against SA now that a test warm-up against CD is scheduled.

I do think cricket fans can get a bit too precious about how meaningful everything needs to be though. I know guys who could tell me the result of every Black Caps ODI in the last 5 years. They remind me of people who can quote entire seasons of a sitcom, or get mad when you throw out an old newspaper.

Completists forget that impulses can be fun too, and few could say having an exciting teenager and an ex-All Black in the side wouldn't be a bit more interesting than a typical midweek afternoon dead-rubber.

Granted, national sides and gimmicks shouldn't really mix. It's not as tacky as a 20/20 Cup though I wouldn't have thought, which the NZC seems very keen on. Ultimately we're the ones who pay for it, so if you're tired of vanilla there's no real harm in saying so.

I can do that too (Simpsons) :)

Anyway, I've never seen Taylor but he does seem to be a good player from what I've read. I just have this impulse to cling to the current lineup after having been subjected to collapse upon collapse; at present there is a solidity to the batting that I haven't seen in a while. You may be right, though. Let's see what happens...
