Excellent toss win for SA, huge advantage if they can get a 400+ 1st innings score which now looks likely.

Funny that in previous eras even when we were useless, I always gave us a 50% chance of winning the toss. Whilst statistics haven't changed since and it's still 50/50 prior to ever toss, FMD you can't blame us KIwis for just expecting we're going to lose the toss these days, It's uncanny.

Happy Southee was left out btw, but not so happy to see Patel replacing him. Good success in county cricket or not, everything I've seen of him in India and the tiny amount today still suggests he's nothing but a 45+ average test spinner.

How much of a sitter was Watling's drop btw, I missed it?

He's never looked like a natural keeper has he? Always looks hard work for him. Thought his keeping was poor in that ODI series in Aust too.

Huge relief.

And well done to Neesham - only one genuine crap deliver in two overs so far, if the commentary is anything to go by, and a couple of near misses before that.

I think Watling has generally been suprisingly sound as a wicket keeper, probably the best we've had at test level since McCullum gave up the gloves. Hasn't dropped many straightforward chances that I can think of.

Hell of a relief to finally get a wicket.

Yeah I agree, although he has been poor today - out of practice?

Something's clicked for Jimmy since the 4th ODI bowling wise, and I love it. Early days I spose but he looks like he's getting over his front leg a lot more and hitting the deck really hard in better areas. Great news for the make-up of all three formats if it continues.

Promising signs, have actually always preferred him as a red ball bowler, generally bowls a good test match length, when he's not spraying it all over the shop of course.

A little stiff for CDG too, didn't really put a foot wrong in his limited Test opportunities to date. Funny it's taken a matter of weeks for him to get a rest on the back of good form, yet it's taken Southee 5 years to be given a spell :p

FTR, I'm not against Neesham replacing CDG, I was probably 50/50 on it leading into this test. Is more solid with the bat Jimmy.
