Both fans and selectors alike are reluctant to back Aakash Chopra for a Test spot. I believe that this is because of a condition with all fans and selectors (mostly Indian) who want instant greatness and are unwilling to stick with consistent mediocraty. I believe that Chopra will never average more than 40 over a Test career, but that he will be extremely solid and wear off the new ball. However, most Indians want the 'quick fix' in chopping and changing until there is a hope of a batsmen who may average over 40 over a career...until of course, he fails in two innings and then his head is called for by angry fans.
Perhaps that was the reason in the past, but Chopra's exclusion at the moment mainly boils down to Jaffer and Gambhir also enjoying ridiculously good domestic form. Chopra isn't really doing anything wrong at the moment - he just needs to wait for one of the other candidates to slip.

Whatever it takes!!!
I have said this before as well, but the problem for India is, while there is backup for almost every position in the side, the difference between the back ups and the main players is not as big as you generally want it to be, whether be it in performance, stats, domestic form or even in terms of "class" (which is a rather vague term esp. when used in the context of selection)... Dhoni doesn't leap out as a test match keeper/batsman to me, inspite of his amazingly improved glove work and neither Karthik nor Parthiv are suggesting they would be DEFINITELY better either, both in batting and keeping.

The same applies to the medium pacers... Ishant LOOKS like a big talent but again, as a wicket taking force, you can't say he is heads and shoulders above the likes of Zaheer Khan, RPS, Sreesanth etc. Pathan and Praveen Kumar don't really convince as all rounders either and if they are to be played as bowlers, again they don't look like they are THAT much better than the other options.

And Harbhajan doesn't exactly jump out as the best spin option either (leaving aside Kumble, obviously) when compared to Murali Kartik or even Ramesh Powar and Piyush Chawla and even Amit Mishra. Everyone seems to be doing well but no one really stands out, apart from the 5 giants in the side ... The 4 middle order batsmen and Kumble. Even among the middle order guys in waiting, the gulf is really not big enough between the likes of Yuvraj, Badrinath, Rohit Sharma etc. And then you have the likes of Kaif and Raina who are still scoring big in the domestic FC scene.

It is the same with the openers... Sehwag seems to have cemented one test openers' spot for the moment, but given the way he plays, you never know... A bad run always seems around the corner. Jaffar is much the same, except that the way he scores the runs is a little opposite to Sehwag. Gambhir keeps scoring heaps at the FC level but you can still the problems in his technique. Same with Uthappa. And Chopra too, I feel, has a bit of a problem with his technique in playing bouncy incoming deliveries or quickish inswing. Karthik seems to have a problem about shot selection.

All in all, while we do seem to have a decent POOL of players to choose from, I am really not sure if any of them really stand out and demand selection majority of the times over others. We have to keep going by form and gut feel, more than anything else. And I guess we will see countless number of X would have been better had he played instead of Y arguments over and over again here and in other forums...

And I am sure I will be a part of them too..... :p

Great stand made by Charl.. Makes me proud :) Sooner or later the lackeys that run our cricket will realize that you can't mess with peoples careers.. Black or white, players want to know that they are the best players in the country, and before that happens, we'll have the current situation..

Now they can't name a black or white replacement, because either way it will be a token gesture.. Good one CSA..

Would love it for Zondeki to stand down as well, TBH. Can't see it happening though, obviously understandably.
Yeah, it won't. He has already said how excited he is. I like him though, doubt he'll actually play but at least he'll be back in the frame.

Should be a crackerjack of a series. Fans should view this as the second part of the leg with South Africa leading the tie 2-1 after their series win back in SA. Hopefully India can be 4-2 up by the end of the tourney and confirm their standing as the 2nd best Test nation.
Predictions:

Steyn to rip it up and take 10 wickets or more

Jaffer (if selected) and Ganguly to fill their boots

SA batsman to struggle if the deck is turning

India failing to force the issue in a game and the end up drawing a winnable match

Bit wacky but yeah whatever.

What hapenned to 'project Karthik is the next great test opener' ?:-O
some guys never get the chances they deserve...... That's how it goes.

And bloody rain in Chennai. :@

I ve lived here all my life and first time I am seeing rain in March. It is supposed to be bloody summer time now..... Spring, in fact, but whatever.......

Karthik is one of the better prospect for opening, imo .... I would pick him ahead of Jaffar

Don't know why they have persisted with Jaffar .... He was clueless in SA, usually late in his movements .... failed in Eng .... was terrible in OZ

his failures have little to do with him being out of form coz as soon as he gets a flattish pitch or weak bowling attack, he scores like in Cape Town, against Pak, in a tour game in OZ and so on but is founding wanting in demanding conditions even when in form

it was unfortunate that Karthik was out of form against Pak and couldnt make use of the opportunity on flat wickets .... in terms of potential i would rate him highly

and below is the 10 day weather forcast for Chennai

http://weather.msn.com/tenday.aspx?wealocations=wc:INXX0202

26th - partly cloudy
27th - sunny
28th - cloudy
29th - mostly cloudy
30th - drizzle

fast bowlers woundn't mind that forcast .... and there are chances of the last day being interrupted due to rain

Unfortunate, but he wasn't scoring runs against a piss weak Pakistan attack when every other batsman was, and then he was up against Australia which always results in India changing their batting order in one way or another.

Unlucky, and he's still not done, but he does look a fair bit off atm. Yuvraj doing **** all in Australia probably helped his chances a bit, but then Viru coming back and doing well has changed things again.

I really rated him and correctly backed him to come good against England, but evidently, he struggles against 150kph which is why he was shaky, at best, against Akhtar.

Last time SA were in India, the lower order for one match was Pathan- Kumble- Harbhajan-Zaheer. All 4 have made good progress as batsmen in the intervening period and have done well recently. If this group plays again - it seems this would be the strongest lower order presently playing (and not an unfeasible bowling unit either).

With Zak and Sharma out (first two tests atleast) - this would be my lineup

Sehwag
Jaffer (ideally Chopra but that's another story)
Dravid
Tendulkar
Ganguly
Laxman
Dhoni
Kumble
Harbhajan
Sreesanth
RP

Don't know why everyone is break dancing off Sreesanth's bandwagon - he's better suited to the test match stuff over the ODI's where can concentrate on that wonderful seam position and putting it on the right areas without having to bowl changeups all the time. Would have been tempted to play Murali Karthik over Bhajji but he's injured.

Dont know about Sreesanth in particular, but there seems to be diminishing patience with test specialists on one hand (probably age bias has atleast something to do with tat) and a belief that doing well , sometimes even occasionally, is enough to push you into a test slot. Certainly India has the depth to alteast afford to have 5-6 specialists each and only a couple of players common to test and limited over teams. If that thought sticks, more patience with folks like Sreesanth (and Copra, Jaffer etc) will follow.

Without Zaheer and Ishant we're going to be relying very heavily on RP. How has he been recently in domestic cricket? Anyone think he's match fit for a Test?

India's main bowling weapon at Chepauk would be Kumble. He has taken a 5-for in practically every match here (his stats here are 45 wickets in 7 matches, avg of 17.24 and SR of 38.6).

Besides Sreesanth is no pushover in test bowling. (even in ODI's he's expensive but usually up for a couple of wickets).

I know jeevan, but it's still essential that we don't waste the new ball and I think RP will be needed more than anyone else available for that.

My worry is that he'll be rushed back too soon and the problems associated with that. I hope we're trying to take care of our young talents.
