Yeah, but that would mean Hamza wouldn't play this series unless de Bruyn or Bavuma were dropped (or six bats are picked). I'm happy for de Bruyn to get the full five here and then be dropped for Hamza at home if he fails. You seemed less fine with that. I think we both agreed on six bats, but failing that this is the top five I'd pick.

I think playing an allrounder at home to ensure four quicks is actually much more important than playing one away for SA tbh, so Mulder in at 6 at home is a no brainer for me. Four quicks in South Africa is often really important. I'd have played six bats this series and then dropped the worst performing middle order one (excluding Faf) for the home season.
Before this test I wanted

Elgar
Markram
De Bruyn
Hamza
Bavuma
Faf
QdK

I want to get Zubayr's career going so if he is required against England at least he has some tests under his belt.

Don't want Zubayr instead of a batsman.

Rassie being a non-playing reserve on this tour in prep for England does make me think Theunis' slack has got less and may get the chop after this series if he doesn't score runs.

It has been really great from these two. It is in some ways surprising considering they had the least match time of all the batsmen. Couple of county stints where they did not score much. Everybody else been in India playing. Shows how much experience does count.

Only if assume all batsmen are equal though. These two along with Markram who got a jaffa early are clearly the best three bats in the team, and I don't just think that's because they're experienced.

I don't think anyone was really coming into this game thinking it'd be unlikely for Elgar and Faf to form South Africa's best partnership just because their warmups hadn't been as thorough.

De Kock not better than any of them?

Excellent bowling. These guys are pretty skilled at getting something out of a road, like Cummins on Australian road.
