**Official** South Africa in England 2012

They'd sooner open with Trott I feel.

I don't think either will happen anyway; their reserve middle order options aren't really much/any better than their opening options anymore now that the Pietersen gap has to be filled as well, especially since Compton is apparently considered an opener by the hierarchy now.
I think Compton has probably missed his chance and as he is 29 is not the best long-term choice. I woould rather the selectors chose someone younger with their career in front of them who can grow into the role of international opener, maybe Alex Hales or Joe Root should be given a chance.

Must be a good chance we lose 4-0 to India and I'd put Aus as favourites for next ashes with or without KP now.
Not the worst time to face India, tbf. The team is in a even bigger transition.

We will be favorites but doubt it would be 4-0.

It would be ridiculous for England not to choose Nick 'Straight Outta' Compton.

Having said that, if they choose him they have to stick with him even if he fails in the sub continent.

I give up watching england cricket if Compton plays. This guy has less shots than Taylor and will score 20 off 120 in India and then get out. He is also meant to be a bit of a bellend/douchebag who isn't liked much on the county circuit.

Unfortunately this means the batting lineup will probably be come india.

Cook
Trott
Bell
Bopara
Taylor
Bairstow

So the Bopara hate will only intensify more.

There is no way England won't replace with Strauss with a top order batsman IMO. It might be a number three rather than a genuine opener but it's not going to be another middle order player; they're struggling enough to find enough middle order replacements as it is.

Having completely ignored Compton in my post in the other thread, I agree with this completely. Compton needs to be in the side, whether it be opening or at 3.

Sam Robson, if he kicks on, once the 'medium term' is up?

Nope, Root's been the nominated one.

I actually expect them to pick Root straight away. Not what I'd do but I think they may head that way. He's definitely a long way ahead of Robson at the moment though given the latter was recently dropped from the Middlesex side.

One could say it puts into perspective the relative lack of interest in NSW about Robson.

As much as I was keen for NSW to give Robson a go due to his First Class success, he wasn't really standing out ahead of the pack in grade cricket either. He's been going well but the likes of Dawson, Mail, Hunt, Cruickshank, Merchant and even allrounders like Moran, Lambert, Keen (pre-move) etc have outperformed him with the bat over the last few seasons. If we weren't willing to let Jaques play county cricket as a local player and still play Shield cricket for us, then yeah...
