It's time we accept that Markram is never going to be our batting fulcrum.
I never thought he would be the batting fulcrum but I expected him to be better. We again have the situation of a player not quite good enough but probably going to hang around because he is likely to be captain for a while.

I've put him into the Duminy category for us now. A player who looks like they should average 45+ plus but finds ways to get out. He is 30 now, it's not impossible for him to have 3/4 years of sustained output but judging by what we have seen I think it's unlikely.

The problem is away from home for Markram..

At home he averages 43 with the bat, away it's just 22..

Elgar had the same problem

Yeah Markram should be averaging 40 at a minimum with his talent , I place him talent wise on par with Herschelle Gibbs (Another underachiever in Test cricket)

I was going to say that he doesn't have as many technical issues as Elgar but he has two glaring ones.
1. He feels outside off. Which is why SA fans haven't bought into him as an opener. In SA, visiting teams don't always bowl the correct length and he is a good enough player to punish that. Same with Elgar.
2. He also reads spin off the pitch. Which is why he gets in a tangle often when he faces someone who has subtle variations. Again, in SA you can get away with that unless we are in Durban or PE.

I think it's important we have a test opener who sets the tone and if he gets in can dominate and get on top of a bowling attack. I don't think we have anyone else who can do it like Markram. So I guess we have to live by the inconsistencies until we have someone absolutely knocking the door down.

Good start for SA, them winning a test series in the subcontinent will also be something unexpected.\
Hope Stubbs makes a good score
