McGrath officially reprimanded for dissent
ICC Media Release
January 5, 2006

Glenn McGrath has been officially reprimanded for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during his country's third Test match against South Africa at Sydney.

In a hearing after play on the fourth day, McGrath was found to have breached Level 1.4 of the ICC Code which relates to "using language that is obscene, offensive or insulting and/or the making of an obscene gesture" by Chris Broad, the ICC Match Referee.

The charge was brought by on-field umpires Aleem Dar, Billy Bowden and the third umpire Bob Parry. The hearing was attended by Steve Bernard, Australian team manager, Ricky Ponting, the Australia captain, Glenn McGrath and the on-field umpires.

McGrath had Herschelle Gibbs dropped by Shane Warne from the first ball of the over, and Gibbs finished it with consecutive boundaries to frustrate the bowler, for which McGrath showed dissent.

McGrath is the second Australian to be reprimanded in this Test match after Brett Lee was pulled up for showing dissent on Day 1.

I find this incredibly harsh - how can it be dissent? The guy's just angry at the dropped catch, and surely that's justified? My on field language is atrocious and tbh, I don't really see the problem with it...

Kallis' apparent selfishness isnt visible today.

Improvised reverse sweep on the last ball.

98 overs in the day - I was thinking it would be around 90. So chance of a bit more lead than 220. 85 overs hopefully but 80 overs to bowl at Australia looks more likely!

Highest score at SCG to win a test match is 276 - 108 years ago. So why not declare around 250!

He started with 14* off 47, unless he's hit a flurry of runs while the web is updating he's not exactly rocketed along from there.

9 off 24 from him so far, at the fall of Prince.

Where did I signal he has sky rocketed?

It's fairly obvious the comment is in response to "Kallis' apparent selfishness isnt visible today." which isn't borne out by the runs he's scored.

Rudolph gone.

No idea in the previous two balls as well against MacGill.

To do with Rudolph's technique or the pitch or bit of both? I cannot determine properly.

I suppose it depends what he said really - If he said "You lucky ****ing pig-****er" to the batsman then I'd considor it obscene and insulting, whereas if he said "Catch it you stupid ****" it might be ok.

And the intent than ability or actual performance would be more important to gauge selfishness or it being absent I thought.

Give over, you're telling me if he the intent was there he'd have scored 9 off 24 balls? If he didn't have the ability he'd have be out like Prince and Rudolph. Anyway looks like he's being a bit more positive now, I'd still be amazed tho if he gets caught on the boundary or something like that.

hmm if Australia could get SA all out for a lead around 275 maximum i reckon they might go for it but who knows...

Strangely a large section of the media - many of them, strangely again, Australians who felt at a loss of words when their team did not know how to handle a batsman playing defensively and not in an attacking fashion, do not feel the same and have critcised Kallis in the test.
I agree with this - if it suits Australia to play attacking cricket it may just be the right tactic sometimes to play attritional cricket. Kallis's game is based upon a sound technique and grinding out runs, to play aggressively would negate his undoubted ability to play the anchor role.

Unfortuanately the rain looks to have spoiled any chance of a result unless SA make a sporting declaration or one of the bowlers bowls remarkably.

Do you want him to throw the wicket foolishly playing a rash shot early in the day when the team has decided to bat more overs?

How would that add to the team cause?

He has made sure not to loose his wicket while improvising - and the other batsman has played more agressively from the other end.

And as you see now - more positive batting right now from South Africa - another reverse sweep from Kallis to get two.

I have no problem with him knocking 1s and 2s, but why did he waste time earlier today?

Okay if he would have got out early on taking risks - it could mean South Africa not being able to play as agressively with fall of wickets from both ends.. So it would make much more sense to keep one end more solid..

They were only 3 wickets down then, the only significant risk was Kallis' batting average taking a small dent.
