Hypothetically if Langer can't play on Boxing Day then who would be the most likely candidate?

I don't think they can add another bowler and have Symonds and Gilchrist at 5 and 6. So I think it would have to be another batsman. In a perfect rotation you'd have to think Phil Jaques would slot in after his 158 today. He was already ahead of Cosgrove in my books.

However, if they decided that Hussey should open the batting then who would slot into the middle order? Clarke's only had one bad performance since he was dropped and that was today. I still think Martyn should be there but that would be a little too optimistic. Who else could they play in the middle order? Katich failed again. I think we'd see either Jaques or possibly Clarke.

On a side note I really don't think Andrew Symonds is test material. His bowling is useful in that he can bowl his allotted overs in the OD game, slow the pace of the game and come up with a breakthrough when the opposition try to get him away. However I don't think there's that pressure in test cricket and his bowling will have little effect. He is largely a batting all-rounder and he's capable of producing huge quality hundreds but they are too few and far between. He's also well suited to the one-day game as he can come in late and smack a quickfire 40 or so but that's little use in test cricket.

Does anyone know when Watson's back? I honestly don't think Symonds should play cricket ever again. He'll probably hit 100 tomorrow now and completely drive the Saffies out of the match.

I agree with everything you just said.

If Langer is out, I dont think theyd really want to disrupt the middle-order again, by promoting Hussey - especially considering his form at No.5. Therefore, I think itd be a straight swap: Jacques for Langer. And yeah, I agree, Symonds is definitely not Test material. When you have four bowlers performing well - McGill, Warne, McGrath & Lee - the fifth bowler is not needed, and hardly bowls anyway.

It's only when you have four bowlers, and one or two of them are consistently underperforming - like Gillespie, Kasprowicz and at times Lee and Tait, all during the Ashes series - that you really need a fifth bowler. Watson is the only player, at present, in Australian cricket who can - or at least has the potential to - fill the allrounder role. Therefore, if he's unavailable, you're better off picking either a specialist bowler or a specialist bat - not someone like Symonds who, in the longer form of the game, is not that great, and is unlikely to be that great, with either bat or ball.

Man its great to see Hodge score runs. He's had his fair share of critics on this board (extremely harsh as well, since the main course of criticism is that Martyn is better, which is far from fair) but it'd be great for him to chalk up his ton tomorrow. Go Hodgey!

Nah, must have missed that, he'd just be a great bloke to be around... some sort of buzz surrounds him lol. He's so funny too (according to Ponting's book which was full of arrogance).

Saw him signing autographs and **** and the camera was on him he turned around, stuck the thumb up and poked out his tongue lol.

Pitty he went missing from tests after the series in WI where he actually bowled really well.

That's a seamer light IMO.

If they can't fit in a man in to make the balance then no.

Is there a player good enough to be top 6 bat and 3rd seamer?

I believe Watson will eventually be this player, but right now, no there is not.

You what?!

Australia will do fine operating with 4 bowlers. They have done so successfully in the past and with two all time greats it isn't hard to see why. With 2 spinners it means that they can bowl the majority of the overs and the 5th bowler would never get a look in anyway.

I wouldn't say theres anyone in the world who's really good enough for that. Flintoff is the cloest thing around.

Australia's best bet for now would obviously be Watson, who can at least justify his spot in one discipline.

Then he clearly thinks Australia should pick three seamers and one spinner. Its not hard to follow.
You're therefore not selecting the third best bowler (ATM) in the country.
