Crampton XI vs Weber XI
Charity Final
at the CW Oval
What a cruel game that even the most worthy of efforts may go unrewarded in the final chapter. David Kearsley could scarcely give any more for the Crampton XI in front of the sell-out crowd at the Cricket Web Oval, and yet his team fell short of victory by some 17 runs.
Every cleverly disguised slower ball that snared a wicket - Halsey and Mitchell - was trumped by the spectacle of timing that Kearsley displayed with the bat. Crisp cover drives and fierce lofted shots considered, his innings of 91 was a masterpiece. And for a while it seemed that he might do with the bat what he had earlier done with the ball, taking 3 for 48 to limit a threatening batting charge. The irony was that he perished to the bowling of his Cricket Web XI coach, as Halsey took a blinding catch on the midwicket boundary.
The batting of Dinu DeSilva, Sean Fuller and Blake Donald shone earlier in the day, but none could steal the spotlight from Kearsley. For while the Red batsman was at the crease, the target of 249 seemed attainable and easily so. It was the stark contrast with captain Alex Crampton that some may attribute the result, however. Crampton was dropped twice and struggled during a 70-ball 39, tied down by the variations of teammate Tom Halsey.
At the arrival of the last stretch of 12 overs, 90 runs were needed by the Crampton XI. The next 6 overs produced 63 runs, but also cost 4 wickets. Though the required run rate was under 5 for the last 6 overs, it was of little consequence with Mat Mitchell and Adam Collins at the crease. Nathan Hoy completed the innings with Nath Patrick's offstump - 16 balls remaining in the innings.
