Dauth XI vs Bennett XI
at CW Oval
2nd innings
A chase could hardly seem more straightforward and yet be so thrilling. Having dismissed the Dauth XI for a mere 99 runs, the Bennett XI set about to score 100 for victory, with 50 overs at their disposal. The drama arose from the premise, that the pitch at hand boasted the most devastating seam-bowling conditions seen at Dev League level in CWLand.
The impact was immediate. Two balls into the innings and Liam Camps was on a hattrick. Cloete was squared up by a sharp Camps legcutter and the ball nestled into the hands of Dwyer at 3rd slip. He was followed by Nick Scott a ball later, though caught at fourth slip in his turn.
Still stunned, Rob Malone flashed at Watt and the score read a miserable 2 for 3. And if there was any doubt that the contest was into motion, Camps cleared it up by first removing Jasotharan's offstump, then fooling Young with a slower ball. Brave enough, Zac Gelman responded to the pressure of 21-4 with a bold strike for six. He and Gaurav Nayak appeared to be arresting the situation and carrying the Bennett XI back into control.
It was a moment for spin. Gelman miscued Pickup to the mid-off fielder, but his replacement, Roberts played with confidence and poise alongside the then established Nayak. Dave Richards was proving ineffective and expensive, but turned out the hero, when at 87-6, he bowled Roberts with a clever arm ball.
Still, just 13 runs were needed and with 3 wickets in hand, the Bennett XI looked odds on to get home. The hero to that point, Nayak looked composed and firmly in control. A seering yorker later and the heroics were ended. Wilson bowled a 91mph yorker to demolish Nayak's legstump and leave him sprawling on the ground.
The equation demanded 6 runs and 2 wickets. But it was irrelevant, given the impact of Josh Forner. He completed a team hattrick for the Dauth XI, wrapping up Kennett and McKern with the first two deliveries of the following over. The stunned silence of the crowd soon erupted into celebration at the spectacle which they had just witnessed.
