Why goodbye smackdown?

I presume it will be a completely different show from that article

From what i've heard, ECW will be taking the Smackdown timeslot, ending the roster split. Could be good, more then likely will end up like XFL, horrible.

Not from what I've heard. ECW's head of booking will be Paul Heyman and Tommy Dreamer, who both (Heyman primarily) run WWE's developmental league, Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW). OVW will be transitioned into ECW with Heyman having complete control. The new ECW will be a mixture of WWE's developmental talent such as CM Punk, Brent Albright etc. alongside guys like RVD, Axl Rotten and other ECW alumni. From what I've heard, they'll be a lot of ECW showcase type matches on Raw and Smackdown as well as a weekly hour long show on television featuring ECW and developmental talent.

So Raw and Smackdown will still remain, as they should. WWE has too many people for just one show.

Welcome aboard. Read over the thread, most of us are pretty long time, 'smart' wrestling fans and you'll find that there's plenty of intelligent discussion here with a lot of great posters such as duffer, shaka and buddhmaster.

Yep agreed there are way too many superstars for just oen show. It will be interesting to see how much T.V time ECW will get.
Do you think the WWE will allow Heyman to book in his 'hardcore' style?

Doubt it. WWE always have the conservative approach.

WWE could not work on one 2-hour weekly show and would not be utilising the full potential of the roster or the company. At the end of the day Smackdown isn't going anywhere.

As for ECW, unless they get Heyman in they could mess it up big time

So any other Brits who saty up until 2am to catch RAW?

Not live this week though as it was filmed here in the UK. Still Ill stay up though. Hopefully some more mic work from Cena, Edge and HHH as that stuff is gold.

This ECW news is slighlty disturbing. It could die on it ****. Vince has to sit back and simply let Heyman do what he did before and Vince merely being the benefactor

Yeah I work night shifts, so on my nights off I have no trouble watching the whole lot, and any stuff I have recorded..

I was tempted to go and see WWE this April, but none of my friends like WWE... Hope to catch it in this country in November if I'm still in the UK

Does anyone know if they tour South Africa? There is a big following and its covered every night on SuperSport, so I'm surprised they haven't tapped into the market yet.. Although we have our own hilarious imitation called Thunder Strike

ummm there used to be but IMO not anymore. This hatred I have towards wrestling is just because I was so much into it during the old days when it was "real wrestling." There were guys like Bret Hart, Owen Hart, Classical Undertaker, Tatanka, Lex Luger, Yokozuna....and so on. When these guys left or were fired, there has been nobody to replace them. Even the storylines back in the day was so good but now it just doesn't make sense. I hate this whole "attitude" era and what it brought. Wrestling used to be something I could watch as a kid along with my whole family but now I don't think its fit for 10 year olds to watch.

Welcome to the thread mate, always good to have a more active wrestling thread.

Here's another summary of a Meltzer Newletter:

WON Notes- Orton, early WM buyrate, Malenko, more

First the Orton stuff:

There is no singular, standout reason as to why Randy Orton was suspended. In the past few years, he had been fined often, usually for $5,000 per offense. Despite the fines, he'd often joke about them. The fines have largely been a result of his treatment of women, both in and out of the company. Also, he's used rude, abrasive language to people who didn't deserve it, not to mention that he's displayed antisocial behavior. WWE may want Orton to undergo counseling, to get to the root of his social issues. He may even have to get medical help, if it is necessary.

Johnny Ace was said to be fed up with Orton's rude behavior, as it was said to be getting out of hand. Orton's always displayed erratic behavior, however, it started to really get out of control at the start of the year. Also, the fines weren't sending a message to him. The decision to suspend him was based on an incident that took place at the 3/28 Smackdown tapings in Kansas City, at the Kemper Arena. Orton flagrantly violated a very public company policy. It was a lot more serious than your typical dress code issue, and it had nothing to do with either creative or economic issues. Apparently, whatever he did, was the final straw. Whatever he did, has been done before in the past as a form of protest, however, nobody was so brazen to do it inside of a building with plenty of people potentially witnessing it, including people not employed by the company who happened to be in the building at the time. Orton was informed of the WWE's decision to suspend him after Wrestlemania.

Nobody was opposing Johnny Ace's decision to suspend him, including friends of Orton, who would normally not side with Johnny Ace. Although, these same people were surprised that WWE made the news of his suspension so public.

Orton's future in World Wrestling Entertainment will be decided upon in the next few weeks. It is likely that Johnny Ace and Vince McMahon will be discussing Orton's future in the WWE this week, and they may make some sort of decision. It should be noted that the day after Orton was informed of the WWE's decision to suspend him (the 4/4 Smackdown tapings), he seemed very interested in keeping his job.

And now the rest:

*Rey needs knee surgery but is putting it off due to SD!’s depth issues

*Beniot will face Malenko at ECW : ONS in a Eddy tribute match

*The 10 year anniversary of the 1997 Survivor Series featuring the Montreal screw job will take place 11/25/07 …in Montreal

*Tomko and Romeo are both working in Puerto Rico now

*Rosey is working the indies as “Ro-Z”

*Paul Ellering suffered “cornea frostbite” while dog racing last month. He was blind in that eye but recovered now

*Terry Taylor had neck fusion surgery this week (can be still bob his head like a chicken?)

*Bret Hart thought Hogan was a good guy who really wasn’t messing with his career in WWF in 93 and WCW 98 and on, until he was at WWE’s home office and saw Hogan’s already taped comments for the SCREWED Bret Hart DVD, which were anti Hart

*Early WMania buyrate numbers are “disappointing”

*The SD! 3 way was to go 20 mins but the show was running long by that point so it was cut in half

*Flair is getting lens restoration surgery

*When boogeyman returns in Sept or October, he will be over 42 years old

*Harry Smith is supposed to debut on RAW on June 5th

*When Vince was a teen , he went to church all the time to be with Linda

*RW Animal wants off the road and is angling for an agent’s job

*NBC pressured Vince to put Ross on SNME due to Styles not being “network quality”

My thoughts:

* Orton is obviously a Grade A tosser, so I'm not surprised by anything we hear about him these days. Maybe some counselling and some time out of the spotlight might make him grow up and show some humility. He has an over-inflated ego and only got his push as a consequence of his looks and his old man's decades of hard work in the ring. When/if he comes back he needs to take a step down the card and put some people over.

* Rey's work has been sluggish recently and I thought it was because he couldn't handle the pressure of being top dog. I'm still sceptical of his ability to do that but it's great to see him willing to work while injured. Batista can't come back soon enough

*Benoit v Malenko should be awesome. Apparently Dean's working really hard to get back into shape and these two guys will put on a great tribute to Eddie, I reckon it could potentially top the Owen tribute as the chemistry these two guys have togethor is super.

* I'm dreading what Vince will do for the Montreal show. Can't put anything past him these days.

* Bret must've been naive to think Hogan didn't have something to do with him being booked so badly in WCW. I'm shocked that he could be left in the dark over something like that.

* I still can't understand why the WWE couldn't have taken some time out of the bloody pillow fights or out of the ludicrous entrances of Trips and Cena instead of taking it from the SD Main Event. Wow.

* Only a month to go before we see Harry Smith. Shame he's on RAW and not SD! with Burchill and Regal, but I'm so excited about this debut.

Everybody's thoughts on any of this?

Completely agree with your thoughts on Orton. He has an attitude problem and that won't go down well with the other wrestlers (Triple H, Undertaker, etc).

The Malenko - Benoit fued is really something too look forward too as well.

I think "feud" is the wrong word for the Malenko Benoit angle. I forsee it being a match of respect not hatred. It will be made "for Eddie" and thats the way they will work it.

As for tomorrow night, if it wasn't for the Triple threat on top the card would be dead. I will be staying up as usual but honestly there is little in there at all.

Mickie v Trish has been a great feud and should be another good match and RVd v Shelton is bound to be a corker but I fear a dodgy DQ ending.

But come on...the HBK v vince feud had its blow out match at Mania and should be over. There is no life in it at all and apart from Vinces comedy there is nothing interesting about the feud. What they will do about "God" is something no one can precit. There will be "divine intervention" in the match but likelihood is it will be awful. Kane v Big show....Yawn. Big show is the most tedious worker in the WWe today and Kane isnt far behind. They finally got them some momenteum as a tandem and then split them up for the purpose of filling the card out and getting Kanes movie promoted.

Carlito v Masters will be interesting but Master limitations will ruin the match as a wrestling bout and Umaga v Ric Flair....remind me of why we are supposed to care?

Saying that WWE always entertain me come PPV time (bar last years No mercy) and all my intial doubts will be set aside come 1am tomorrow
