Raw seemed like a mixed bag tonight. Some great matches but also a whole lot of crap from a storyline point of view. Chris Jericho vs Rey Mysterio was solid as was the triple threat match for the World Heavyweight Championship.

I'm really liking CM Punk's character at the moment and it seems to me that WWE are going to slowly turn CM Punk heel which is great. CM Punk has been a fantastic heel in the past and has the right attitude to be a heel as well. I thought his promo this week was really entertaining.

Randy Orton winning the WWE Championship and Triple H being named number one contender again was no big surprise. The main event scene is pretty stale on the Raw side of things and I'm wondering when they will elevate someone like MVP, Matt Hardy or The Miz to the WWE Championship scene.

The storyline of Vince selling Raw seems pretty bad and the crowd for the most part weren't into it either. The crowd weren't into most of the show really as it was an incredibly quiet crowd and it took away from the quality of the show. As always looking forward to ECW and Smackdown this week.

I've tried the demo and the graphics and gameplay were both pretty good. How deep is the career mode and are there any other features in the game that keep you interested?
That whole game just depends on how much you get out of the gameplay really. The career mode is one of the most repetitive i've ever played, it's literally no deeper than "train + fight + repeat X amount of times (usually end up having had just over 30 fights per career)" with the occasional training camp in to learn new moves. Online play at the moment is awful because of lag and no punishments for quitters so unless you can find some friends to play with with good connections you might just end up frustrated.

That being said I love the gameplay despite being an avid anti-UFC'er before this game and I definitely feel like I got my money's worth for the game, one of the most fun fighting games i've ever played and it's given me a much bigger appreciation for the UFC and MMA in general.

edit: though I should mention, being able to customise and train your own fighter in career mode is pretty cool. It's nice to be able to go through careers using guys with different fighting styles and seeing what works well together and what doesn't. So far I've done a fair few careers, currently in the middle of doing a Muay Thai/Judo fighter and having a boatload of fun, these two fighting styles work extremely well together i've found. It's really the experimenting and feeling yourself grow in stages as a player that keeps you hooked in. Your improvement at the game is much more noticable than other games i've found, there are obvious walls to overcome in order to become a good player at the game and cracking them down is great imho. The demo isn't really a good indicator of the whole game because both the fighters in it primarily use striking styles in the game. The first time you come up against someone who is primarily a wrestler, say, who tries to constantly take you down and pound your face in you might end up getting your ass handed to you thoroughly. BUt Working out how to defend yourself and eventually mastering that shiet and then turning it on other people instead, god damn, it is sweet.

I watched Raw with my brother tonight and enjoyed it, thought it was the best Raw in a while, though that was inevitable given that it had the top guys from Smackdown on it!

I wasn't looking forwards to the 4-way but thought it was a good fast-paced match, and it was good to see Orton win cleanly. The main event does need a bit of spark, but Orton was the only logical choice for champion in this one I reckon.

The triple threat was obviously awesome, and Christian-Tommy was good if a little short. Y2J and Mysterio continue to excel, imagine this feud will end at The Bash, not sure, still hoping that everything is building to jericho-Edge at Summerslam tbh.

The battle royal was a decent watch as well, and I liked the fact that Triple H-Orton will take place next week rather than on PPV again, it shows that they know people don't want to pay for that AGAIN and also that they are trying to get ratings back on Raw. A LMS on Raw - not sure what to make of that!

As for the Trump thing. Very, very strange. Not sure what to make of it at all, let's see if he appoints a GM and who. When Vince said he was selling to someone he had a lot of history with I was shouting "Bish!"

The thing about that is, although it might seem shallow the intricacies involved in properly building your fighter to go up the ladder of your division is thoroughly immersing. It actually mirrors real life MMA very well in that you need to be proficient at every discipline attacking and defensive otherwise you will be stuck in mid card mediocrity forever.

Being one dimensional gets your ass whooped when the big boys come to town. And the sparring, workouts and fights take on a whole new relevance for me in trying to improve my all round game. I lost three fights while I was still struggling to sprawl properly and guys like Nate Marquardt and Thales Leites would just take the piss out of me when I went up against them.

The continual adding of skills to your repotoire and seeing them pay dividends in the ring is plain awesome. Thoroughly satisfying experience for mine. The only caveat for me is that it is such a realistic sim that most non fans might be overwhelmed with the gameplay and might just resort to button mashing. Although if you come from a wrestling fans background I don't think that would be the case. It's a game where you need to work to master it but it's so worth it.

Agree with you about the demo though, barely scratches the surface of what the game is about. One of the best I've ever bought.

EDIT: Oh, saw you sort of adressed most of that in your edit.

Haha actually my first like 7 fights in the game were all against standup guys and I was banging them out with my boxer character, and then in my first fight against a noteable UFC name (Demian Maia) he took me to the ground for the first time and I got my ass kicked and subbed in about 40 seconds. I then made up for that by KO'ing Marquardt three times in a row. Like I said before I knew very little about UFC before playing this game and I didn't know that he was supposed to be some kind of beast IRL. I don't think he ever tried to take me down once. The guys that gave me the most problems early on were the ones who spammed clinches like Rich Franklin and Chieck Kongo, found it highly disruptive and they'd end up beating the snot out of me.

But yeah I quickly learned that being one dimensional in the game was not going to work at all xD. Ended up having the most fun learning BJJ anyway, making people whinge online when you make them tap out is pretty hilarious.

I have some great PPV watching evenings ahead of me, got the following four for my birthday/with birthday vouchers:

No Way Out
Backlash
Judgment Day
Fully Loaded

all from 2000. Some of my favourite matches are on these, Rock-HHH iron man, Angle-Jericho for the IC, HIAC HHH-Cactus Jack, Rock-HHH at Backlash, and finally my all-time fave, the LMS between Jericho & HHH.

2000 was the best ever year for wrestling IMO. I enjoyed it so much, I think it's way I prefer Rock to Austin. But HHH was so good at this point, and Angle/Jericho/Benoit really were exciting.

On balance I would probably agree, though in saying that, whenever I think of 2000, I always consider the early stages of 2001 to be in the same bracket. For some strange and illogical reason I really enjoyed parts of early 2005 as well, was when Christian was beginning to come into his WWE peak I suppose.

Also, been playing a fair bit of Total Extreme Wrestling 2008 really doing a modern day scenario with the WWE, any other players? Will post PPV cards etc...and general feedback for my progress in here if anyone is interested.

Yeah, look at the sequence of PPVS from the start of 2000 through to WM 17 and there is hardly anything you wouldn't want to watch (I mean as a show, obviously there are matches that aren't much cop). I'm gonna list a great match from each PPV just to prove my point

RR2000 - Street fight between HHH & Foley
NWO - Angle V jericho
WM16 - Angle V jericho V benoit / 3-way ladder tag match
Backlash - Jericho V Benoit
Judgment Day - Rock V HHH
KOTR - Angle V Jericho (this PPV was actually one of the poorer ones tbf)
Fully Loaded - Jericho V HHH
Summerslam - all over it, brilliant PPV, either Rock V HHH V Angle or Jericho V Benoit would top most PPVs, but TLC
Unforgiven - Edge & christian V hardy Boyz (steel cage)
No Mercy - Rock V Angle
Survivor Series - Triple H V Austin
Armageddon - Jericho V Kane
RR01 - Benoit V jericho
NWO - Austin V HHH
WM17 - all over it, TLC2 ftw

Yeah played a a lot last year but mainly with the original database the stats are more in sync with the game played the Mexican scene to death.

Personally, I found the Judgement Day match more memorable because of the return of the Undertaker, and that overshadowed the match itself, that said, I'm not a fan of Ironman matches, simply because they go on for too long and get a bit dull, whoever is involved, in fact I can't recall another 60 minute match being held again since, though for some reason I think there has been....?

Another quite underated match I thought, was X-Pac vs Chris Jericho in a steal cage, which iirc was at No Mercy? I really quite rated Sean Waltman, and although he is a bit of an idiot and a general fail, I thought he was really rather good in the ring, and always rooted for him.

On a side note, the thing I remember most about NWO 2001 was the match between Rock and Angle, when the Big Show interfered (having won the hardcore title earlier in the night), chokeslammed everyone in the ring, including the referee, for no obvious reason, and then having cleaned house just walked out, and the whole thing was never mentioned again....Another interesting part from that match was when Earl Hebner failed to count to three after the Rock rock bottomed Kurt Angle, if you look carefully (although its been semi edited out) you can see the Rock have a go at Hebner before he hits the rock bottom for the second time.

Yeah, I might try with the original database at some point, but it doesn't really have the same appeal for some reason.

just play a game and once you get to know the charecters you will love it 10 times more since their stats are just perfect for the game. Start with SWF ot TCW these 2 are the Big 2 and some of the main characters are loosely based on real life characters it would allow you to ease in to the game.
