Haha.

I really enjoyed Trips from 97-2002, but there's no doubt he absolutely stunk as a face in 2002 and they took the title off him quicker than anything. And then he just ruined Raw for a year.
Yeah he's such a natural heel IMO

duffer you will love this - check out solomonster discuss whether Chyna should be in the Hall of Fame but just spending 5 minutes spraying the **** out of Triple H

He has a gift for decomposition. Stunning.

Oh and is there any Bret-Dynamite Kid stuff on WWE Network? Would be worth it just for that.

Yep?

edit: From Stampede, so probably won't be there.
Yeah there's no stampede on there but hasn't Vince bought it or am I imagining it? If so, give it time

Wm3 is on there though (obviously). Hart foundation and Danny Davis v bulldogs and Tito Santana

Maybe some stuff from SNME too, they are all there

Think he's the most overrated wrestler of all time.
I read through bits of the old wrestling thread the other day and saw us discussing this before. So I don't feel the need to argue it again; but man I don't think you could be more wrong.
Im torn on this. He repeated the same spots night after night, didnt really do that much of interest offensively in the ring, wrestled kinda stiff, and was unreliable. But man he could draw. He also put over everyone - seemingly going forever without wins as he lost to Dusty and others. He was the perfect heel. Great on the mic and made the face look good.

As a wrestler he is probably overrated but as an entertainer he is close to being unparalleled,

Flair would be overrated if one's overall rating was determined exclusively by wrestling ability (though he's hardly a slouch, even these days), but in terms of charisma, psychology, and pretty much everything else he's absolutely in the top bracket for mine.

Love how much more active this thread has become over the last few weeks/months btw.

Flair might not be a top bracket pure technician but I just think all his big matches have such great little stories woven into them and have beautiful pacing. I watched his series with Steamboat a few weeks ago and while it's not anywhere near as spectacular as it would've been for people watching back in 1989, the matches still retained my interest all the way through despite not having flashy spots by today's standards, because in conjunction with the promos to build the feud, the trilogy tells one heck of an amazing story.

And talking of overrated, I just need to point at Bret vs HBK Iron Man match from Wrestlemania 12... hour long and all, so a good effort and a damn good match, but boy the first 25 minutes especially are absolutely painful. It's literally all just chinlocks and restholds. For 20 friggin minutes. Contrast this with the Steamboat-Flair at Clash of Champions which is also 60 minutes, it's ****ing clear to me which match is better... it's the one that manages to keep me interested for a whole hour. Those old Flair matches look unspectacular, but I just urge all of you to get a Flair DVD collection, like Ultimate Ric Flair (2003) which have all those matches along with the promos to set them up. It's fabulous to watch and I was amazed that something from the late 80s impressed me that much, because I just associated that era with roided up monsters like Warrior doing big splashes and pinning people in 7 minutes.

Bit controversial, but my favourite Flair moment was when someone (I think it might have been Kevin Nash) slammed his head in the door of the War Games steel cage haha. I remember some guy in the crowd freaking out

Goughy's point on him putting everyone over is so good. That talent, to lose that often and stay at the top of the card and be regarded as a threat is a preserve of only a handful. The others who were great at this were The Rock, modern Jericho and latter era Shawn, IMO.

Foley, possibly, at a stretch.

Haha that was great... I miss the Wargames a lot actually.

My favourite Flair moment is definitely his in ring promo where he stripped down to his boxers and ripped into Hogan and Bischoff... pissed myself laughing when I saw it

In fairness to Flair's technical abilities, the ultimate wrestling nerd Dave Meltzer gives match ratings with five star matches being exceptionally rare. Flair has the second most five star matches by Meltzer's ratings (the only higher guy is Mitsuharu Misawa with something incredible like 26).

For future reference, has anyone watched much of Misawa?

Oh yeah, it's by no means completely objective. The fact that as load of the great WWE matches which weren't given 5 stars but would've been if it had been in Japan shows that. But it's at least a decent starting point.
