I had a few issues with the presentation, mainly: mediocre entrances and themes, bad camera cuts, and one of the commentators was terrible. Other than that though, it was pretty great. The Cody match in particular was really well done.

Moxley with a bit of freedom is a game changer, IMO. Makes their roster feel a lot more legit.

I think they need another star in the women's division, though. Shida and Kong are great picks to base the Joshi stuff around, but the other match with Kylie Rae was a bit meh. They need another name there make it really pop.
Kong won't be an actual roster member, will she? Surely it was just for the PPV?

Giving a pass to a lot of the presentation stuff for now, if it's still poor in 6 months to a year then its a big deal. I really liked the commentary but yeah the third man was useless, best JR has been in ages, Excalibur is great and was a good foil to guide JR. I quite liked Kylie Rae/Britt Baker/Awesome Kong though the 4th woman was deeply average.

EDIT: Just saw she's "only" 48. So maybe she is a part of the roster after all.
My half-arsed research tells me Hikaru Shida is the one that's signed full-time and Riho is on for 5 shows, while Aja Kong was just for this show. That's kind of disappointing, honestly. Wouldn't mind seeing her get a title run to give the belt a bit of legitimacy early on.

Awesome Kong looked in pretty terrible shape, btw. Cool surprise, but I don't have any real interest in seeing her wrestle at this point.

What do you mean you aren't excited to see another part-timer hold a secondary title hostage through G1-WK season?
My qualms are with the product and the style right now more than the "booking", but yeah not ideal I'd say. I was hoping Moxley would do deathmatch stuff again but it doesn't really make sense that he would, wife and not short of $$$ etc.

How so? I know your taste is very different to mine (and that's fine, obvs), but interested to hear your view here.

In list form:
- Unnecessarily long matches. It's gotten really bad, these BOSJ matches going close to 30 minutes is preposterous. I don't mind the biggest of matches going long but block matches in Jnr tournaments pushing 30 is a waste of my time.
- Leading on from that, the long matches would make sense if they meant anything. Especially in the main event scene with Okada, Sanada, Tanahashi etc where they work limbs for 15-20 minutes then when they finally hit the finishing stretch and things matter they forget all of the build up. Okada especially bad at this. Some of the SHO matches in this BoSJ matches have had such egregious examples of this. In the match with Dragon Lee he was selling the arm, then flexed the arm, then deadlift powerbombed Lee in the space of 20 seconds. What?
- I really dislike Will Ospreay. In ring and out.

There's other stuff but most of it stems from my complaints about the main event style. I will be back for G1 but outside of G1 and Dominion/WK I will probably check out until it tones down a bit.

That's all pretty fair. I wonder if they're using so many draw teases to make the eventual draw somewhat surprising (in the way they did with the 19 counts before finally pulling the trigger on a countout), but the length thing is far broader than BoSJ. I do rate the use of it in the SANADA-Okada story though.

And yeah, sell the ****ing leg. I still don't know if its worse when they don't sell it, or when they sell it hopelessly inconsistently. I kinda get that the finishing stretches are meant to be the whole running-on-adrenaline fighting spirit kinds of things, but when every big match involves limb work and in every big match it never matters, may as well just watch the last six minutes and be done with it.

I imagine if I was watching more frequently and paying greater attention when I did, I'd end up in much the same spot as you on it. But hey, at the moment I'm mostly sports-entertained by it.

I don't hate NJPW but I'd rather give my $10 a month to DDT instead. Nothing in DDT bores me. Their wrestling is great, their comedy is great, they book women strong and do intergender. They have Andreza, Sasadango Machine etc. All good stuff.

I feel like because the matches are on the longer side as well, after you've been watching for a few years it starts to become a bit repetitive. I'm on my fifth year of watching, I really don't have any desire to see Tanahashi wrestle Okada in two or three big 30+ minute matches again like he did last year. He passed the torch back in like January 2016.

Every Okada filler defence is like 20 minutes too long man it drives me batty. That match with Sanada literally put me to sleep.

Also, the Skull End is the worst move in wrestling.

Seen the Lesnar stuff, so easy to forget how good he can be when goofing around. This version of Brock over super serious Brock please.
