*Official* Pakistan in New Zealand 2020/21

I hope Bracewell is well down the list. The guy has had 27 tests, and - except for one game in 2011 he hasn’t done nearly enough on the field to justify his selection now. Not to mention a long run of injuries and a series of drink driving convictions.

I think the selectors will be conservative and go for Henry on his home ground. But I wouldn’t mind seeing Duffy have a go.
Fair enough point, and to be fair to Henry, he was the best bowler in the A game:

I would run with Nathan Smith in the Mitchell role at number 7 and a proper spin bowler like Ajaz. I feel like Smith offers more with the ball at test level even if his Plunket Shield numbers aren't quite there yet. Performs well for NZ A, and he's basically come up against this Pakistan side recently.

Boult, Southee, Jamieson, Smith, Ajaz is a good attack. Henry and Bracewell don't inspire much confidence.

Obviously if Ajaz is ruled out, which seems to be the case, you stick with Santner.

The Herald suggests Henry is the most likely option, but that Ed Nuttall could be a surprise choice. I reckon that would be a pretty nice surprise. After a terrible run with injuries and some time looking very military medium, I have thought Nuttall looks back to his best this year in the footage I have seen of him. He also took a five wicket bag against Pakistan ‘A’ and is another left-armer.

Yeah a good season in our draft points for Nuttall, but without the spring's 'Dookaburra' ball, I'm not sure I'd back him yet for shaping it back down the right-hander's lbw line, and of course he still dreams of having Wagner's accuracy with the short ball.

This must be the first time ever Wagner is missing out on fitness grounds? What a champion, the attack owes him a rest for sure. Truth be told, none of the replacements really appeal, need two bowlers to replace him really. (What timing for Lockie to get injured, clearly the Will Young of the bowling unit when it comes to test opportunities.)

Would agree with James and prefer a frontline spinner to replace Wagner and a seam bowling allrounder for Santner (not Bracewell unless his batting has really improved to a no.7 standard. Mitchell then I suppose, too early for Smith). CdG being ruled out hasn’t helped either. Though I guess we all know it’ll be Henry for Wagner and that’s that.

The Nuttall 'A' 5-fer was not pretty, though.

A test recall for Hamish Bennett 10 years after his sole test appearance would be a heart warming story.

If Ajaz isnt fit Gavin Larsen can play for Santner. He had his dream test 2 wickets. He can retire on a high - his Mount Everest ( more like mt manganui lol)

Gutted that Wagner is out. I still feel ashamed thinking/ saying that Wagner was a "stop gap measure" when I saw his first few tests. What an idiot. He is a freak. I've never seen any bowler of his pace ever look that threatening with short balls. It's almost as if he is bowling 10 k faster than he really is.
Whoever we pick- there is no real replacement. Not cause we dont have good bowlers- but everyone in NZ is a new ball bowler.

Fergusen would have been great but oh well hope whoever we pick does well. Kind of hope it's someone new rather than Henry/ bracewell. I think they will pick Henry anyway. I like him but he's basically useless once the shine is gone

I also don't think Boult has many years left at test level. He just doesnt have the same energy - it's pretty obvious to see. Id be thrilled if we got 2 more decent test seasons out of him.

So for international readers, Whangarei is north of Auckland and it's really well-known for often offering plenty to swing bowlers. A bit of that has to be weighted in for how well Nathan Smith went.
