But in rugby commentary terms. Stevenson is considered the woke guy. And prepared to be critical of NZRU where others are pressured to tow a Sky/NZRU line.

With a commentary style more like the 'too fast talking 1990s American Sportscenter' style, rather than say a Graeme Hughes and Danny Morrison League / cricket crossover style.

Don't really get the boofhead link.

And tbf to Stevenson, back when he was doing Mitre 10 Cup rugby games for Sky, I think he was one of the (very) few commentators who personally checked with players to make sure he pronounced names correctly.

Haven't heard enough of him doing cricket to judge, but can imagine his style may not be the most suitable, and I have no idea how much knowledge he has about the game.

This problem would mostly solve itself if they just employed some Maori and Pacific commentators...

It's really a pretty basic and pathetic standard. Polynesian languages are probably the easiest in the world to get right, pronunciation wise and yet it never happens in the biggest polynesian country. Sad.

Coney and Williams would be great additions to the Spark line-up. I am really enjoying listening to Williams on Rova. But I guess Spark are not so interested in attracting more middle-aged, middle-class white guy viewers (since we are all already cricket fans). I actually think that is great, and love Sophie, Franky and the other new additions. But I just don’t understand what market Spark are trying to appeal to with Scotty Stevenson. The white, male boofhead market?
Good point about the older commentators.

The boofhead thing seems to be the target market for their Late Cut show as well ... the couple I've watched have been a pretty tedious waste of time. A far cry from the Cricket Show on Sky which could be a bit of fluff at times, but also had some decent interviews with lower profile or touring players you wouldn't get anywhere else ... and covered lower level stuff which was usually pretty interesting.

They have.Lose and Laban.

While I respect Lose now, he was 10 years or more of terrible before his commentating abilities matched his ability to pronounce Polynesian words. Suggests to me it's easier the other way round. Employ competent broadcasters and work on their pronunciations .

willy lose suffered from being employed by radiosport during their major shock jock era. he was crap there, just like the rest of the radiosport crew during that time.

laban is superb.

Just because one Polynesian commentator isn’t good doesn’t mean they’re all crap. There’s good ones out there, just gotta find the right person! Plenty of rubbish Pakeha commentators around as well.

Who was the younger guy alongside Coney and Waddle at radiosport? He always seemed a really good ball-by-ball guy. Can't find his name anywhere.

I don't have the same level of contempt for Stevenson as some here, he's good in rugby, or at least the levels below international stuff. It is odd though that he's become a mainstay in both the America's Cup and NZ cricket commentary teams. Reaching Mark Richardson in levels of overexposure.

I like Laban, but he always goes on about "2nd man plays" every 5 minutes.

Also Mils Muliana is improving as a comments man. Certainly a lot better than JK already, but not as good as Jeff Wilson yet.

Wheres my dream team of Doug Golightly, Mystery Morrison and Chris Cairns.
Haha, one of my all time favourite commentary moments was the day when the Mr X scandal broke in the news, with Simon Doull giving Cairnsy the ultimate troll face and saying "Well Chris, interesting development in the news this morning. What do YOU think about it?"

I'm prepared to reserve judgement on Stevenson after he had the balls to say "Gotta love a pink-worm rise." during a game broadcast on TV1.

stevenson appeals to the alt commentary market as well, and the alt comms do a good job drawing young casuals into being cricket fans in my anecdotal experience. spark might be trying to access that untapped base since sky never bothered really, their market was boomers who could afford sky and they even despised those who bludged a skygo password off their family or friends.

I’m really intrigued you say that - because not only have I always thought Sumo was the ultimate NZRU positive PR lackey, I also thought to myself that he was a rip off of Danny Morrison ripping off Graeme Hughes.

I'm probably going against the grain and will say this will be a really competitive series. Pakistan are a dangerous side with the ball and can also bat long periods. I'm not sure they'll take the series but can definitely see this ending 1-1
