Far too easy to say CdG is dispensable (TBH it shouldn’t even be a discussion) but I think the 4th innings at Mount showed why he’s needed. Pace quartet all well and good but they need someone to give them a rest so they can keep charging in and not get overbowled. Santner was supposed to play that role but couldn’t land two deliveries on the same spot. No evidence yet on Mitchell’s bowling but it’s not quite at that level you feel. CdG not only very accurate but a proven wicket taker in home conditions. Add to that his batting which is just right for no.7. Averages of 37 and 31 keep him well above the bits and pieces tag which so many overseas fans still use to describe him.
As to who misses out when a specialist spinner plays, you have to make tough decisions sometimes - in the UAE and Sri Lanka Southee and Wagner missed out on a couple of occasions.Need to be flexible depending on the conditions and form.

The four current quicks are all undroppable. Five quicks is illegal on some forums. Jamieson can't bat 7 so the spinner needs to be an all-rounder. Santner appears to be considered unselectable by CW. This means one thing and one thing only - post Santner in the team on Reddit.

Southee has been in better form than Boult for well over two years now and he's currently in better form than Wagner. Lowest average and best strike rate of the three for the last few years too.
