*Official* - Pakistan in New Zealand 2010/2011

The Pakistan knocks were in 2009. And he wasn't just edgy against Australia early. Had a sitter dropped by Watson when he was on about 80 iirc. Was a brilliant but streaky knock, much like his 150 against India in 2009. Go and find the highlights if you like. Slashed it through the gully region so many times, TH was going mental about how lucky he was. Much better than that one was the 100 he made in the 3rd testof that series, when he looked a lot more in control.

As for the slog sweep, regardless of how well in he is, it still gets him out often enough to suggest that he just shouldn't play it in the longer form of the game.

Yes he scores runs and he's clearly one of the best 3 or 4 batsmen in the country. But that doesn't mean he's without flaws and isn't open to occasional criticism.
Haha, but Bahnz, he doesn't get out to the slog sweep in test match cricket very often at all, that's my point. You've found one example, and I'd estimate there's four more tops. That's five innings at most.

I'm fine with criticism for players, I'm just against wrong criticism against players.:p The amount of "occassional criticism" Taylor gets far outweighs the things he's done wrong.

There was a period in ODI cricket where he got out to it every second game, but it rarely brings him down in tests.

Lovely last cover drive that. Good to see, given how awful Arnel is, we really need a quality number 9 to pad the lower order.

Watching Williamson, its frustrating how little power he seems to get into a lot of his shots.
Southee needs to prove he can do this more than once every ten tests though. Definitely can be a gun number nine.

Yeah, he reminds me of Clarke in more ways than one.

The accusation isn't that he gets out to the slog sweep all the time, its that he gets playing silly shots more generally. The fact that some of his best innings (his 120 v England and his 150 v India) have been cut short by that shot probably adds to the perception that he gets out to it a lot. But even if he doesn't it's still an attrocious way to get out in test cricket. Quality players really shouldn't be dismissed top edging a slog in test cricket with any kind of regularity, and its symptomatic of some of the bigger problems with his mental game. He can be a very frustrating player.

Having said all that, I agree he cops more criticism than he should. He's an attacking player, and people are only to happy to fall over themselves lavishing him with praise when it comes off, but are quick to forget when he goes through a lean trot, that fundamentally nothing has changed with how he's playing.

I cbf going through cricinfo commentary, but I don't think his good ball/**** shot ratio is very different to anyone else. Of course, I would like him to be dismissed by 80%+ good balls, but that isn't the case for 98% of test batsmen.

I agree, he doesn't help his own perception sometimes, especially since we play a lot more ODIs than tests and he's a good at best ODI batsman.

Just got home. Way to immediately put yourself on the backfoot in a 2-match series NZ. Sounds like they've thrown half their wickets away. Anyone else get the feeling Pakistan will get 400+, looks like a good batting deck.

The new ball will be a mini-battle and a chance to look at Williamson against it. Hopefully Southee helps him out by sending it down the road.
