Batting at number three brings with it its own pressures, a position synonymous with batting your best player there, not sure that is exactly the case, but. When he comes in at six with the score on 60/4 I wouldn't think as a youngster he'll feel too much pressure, there's little expectation if the main men, the experienced batsmen have all failed. Any contribution will be well received. At three there will be pressure to score big.Oh, and on the topic of Williamson batting at three...
Would you rather him in at 1/30 or 4/60? Because so far in his short career he's been coming in when things have been dire for NZ. Far less pressure knowing you'll either be in within 80 balls or watching McIntosh bat all day.
When he bats at six and we collapse, he only has Vettori and Young behind him in the order. That's a lot of pressure. At number three he can bat when the **** hasn't hit the fan yet, even if the score is 1/5 or something.
Why don't one of the more experienced players step up into that position. Asking a lot of Williamson in the long term to nail the number three position. It's not necessarily handling him with kid gloves, just doing the right thing and being patient with his development. I'm not saying he cannot succeed doing it on a temporary/one-off basis, but for me, he is best served currently at around number 5 or 6 while he gets to know his own game inside out.To be fair though, they did so because their 'regular' positions were occupied; not to protect them.
I bet that if Wright asked Williamson where he wanted to bat, he'd say three. He bats three in First Class cricket and there's an opening at three in the team that no-one else wants. I can see the argument for batting him down the order but it's becoming more and more tenuous as time goes on - the obsession with handlinhg him with kid gloves come what may to the balance of the rest of the team is getting pretty ridiculous IMO.
Indeed. Here we go....have a feeling Vettori should have bowled...but oh well....
Perhaps not ideal but Williamson's simply far, far too good to bat at six in this lineup. Going in early obviously has its problems, hard ball generally, moving around, it's a whole new game, one I think he could grow into, just not yet.

It seems he is going to bat at 3, so I hope I'm wrong and he scores big today.
No, but Guptill certainly was.Grrr, missed the 1st 2 overs, wicket down already, was McCullum out?
