Oh, and on the topic of Williamson batting at three...

Would you rather him in at 1/30 or 4/60? Because so far in his short career he's been coming in when things have been dire for NZ. Far less pressure knowing you'll either be in within 80 balls or watching McIntosh bat all day.

When he bats at six and we collapse, he only has Vettori and Young behind him in the order. That's a lot of pressure. At number three he can bat when the **** hasn't hit the fan yet, even if the score is 1/5 or something.
Tbh if he does come in at 1/5, he'll be facing a tough time against the quicks. He'll be much better if he does get to start his innings against spin. He just have to hope NZ middle order starts performing.

I say that for a couple of reasons:
1 - He doesn't seem to able to score quickly or find the boundaries against the fast bowlers, hence he won't put any pressure on them.
2 - He's got a twitchy footwork at the start of his innings, and just like any batsman it makes him a likely candidate of being dismissed early.

I still feel Taylor is your best #3.

I don't think Taylor wants to bat at number three though tbh. He sat at number 4 performing as our best batsmen while we rotated various players in the position Guptill, Flynn, Sinclair etc. You would think he would take up the mantle especially considering he is apparently the future captain.

I remember a List A or 20/20 domestically where he smashed Bond around the park in an over or two. The kid can score quickly and find the boundaries when it suits him, especially on friendlier (to him) NZ pitches.

His footwork seems fine at the start of his innings.

I'm not comfortable with Taylor at three, especially given his current form. Ryder would be a better choice if we were going to push up a more established batsman (though ironically Taylor, Ryder and Williamson wouldn't have 50 tests between them).

The best and most suited player for the number three role in the side is Williamson. I understand people not wanting him to bat at three yet, and I can see the logic, but given our options I'm leaning towards Williamson at three as the best option available.

Put him at three. Don't really understand the thing of playing new bats down the order. It only works when the team already has a reliable top order, which we plainly don't.

Not a fan of Williamson at three the following batsman started their career down the order:

Ricky Ponting
Sachin Tendulkar
Don Bradman

To be fair though, they did so because their 'regular' positions were occupied; not to protect them.

I bet that if Wright asked Williamson where he wanted to bat, he'd say three. He bats three in First Class cricket and there's an opening at three in the team that no-one else wants. I can see the argument for batting him down the order but it's becoming more and more tenuous as time goes on - the obsession with handling him with kid gloves come what may to the balance of the rest of the team is getting pretty ridiculous IMO.

Would bat Vettori in front of young in this game. Young may be a good player and did nothing remarkably wrong or right with the bat in the first game - but I would make the change just to give Vettori a vote of confidence and hopefully kick start his batting.

Fair point. He was Mr reliable with the bat in tests not to long ago. He has looked hopeless of late though.

Will be interesting to see if Franklin gets picked. Saw him bat on the third day of the warm up game in Whangarei and he looked in sublime touch, until he inexplicably lobbed one to point. Don't think I'd bat him at 3 though - would prefer to see him at 6, with everyone else shifting up one spot.

I'm not really a fan of dropping McIntosh. Sure, he's not the most talented opener ever, but once he gets in, he shows a level of application and commitment that some of our other guys are sorely lacking. I just think that maybe if he gets in and plays a nice, steady, sensible knock, some of that might rub off on his teammates.

Although I do agree that he won't help much if he gets out cheaply, which is probably about a 60-70% chance.

And by recent NZ openers standards, he hasn't really done that badly.
He had some good performances i will give you that. The hundred in India was the best for mine. Someone actually pointed out in an earlier post that if he had rightly been given out the first time and had not gone on to look so streaky at the crease that he would likely still be in the starting eleven for the second test. Bad luck can string from good luck i guess.

Considering NZ batted for only 30 odd overs last Test innings, McIntosh is a batsman I would not consider dropping at this stage as he's shown on a number of occasions that he can survive long periods.

If he can survive to lunch on day 1, even if he's on just 25 or so, he would have done his job and I think you'd see the middle order rewarded later on in the day.
