Papps puts hand up for Canty
11 November 2004
Tim Papps scored his third century from four innings to promote his cause for Canterbury selection in a two-day match against Northern Districts at Lincoln No. 3.
Papps, who clocked up 119 runs, and East-Shirley clubmate Neil Broom, who made 92, added 154 in just 119 minutes for the fifth wicket as the Canterbury XI amassed 350 runs for seven from its 100 overs.
Papps, usually an opener, batted in the unaccustomed position of No. 6 as he and Broom helped rally the Canterbury XI after the loss of brother Michael Papps (4) and Shanan Stewart (0).
The left-handed Tim Papps, who made one Canterbury appearance last season, batted for three hours, faced 147 balls and hit 16 fours.
Northern Districts had sent Canterbury in but met early resistance from Tim McIntosh (31) and Gary Stead, who batted 199 minutes for his 61 with 11 fours.
The most successful of the Northern bowlers were medium pacers Graeme Aldridge and Mark Orchard with two wickets apiece.
Black Cap Daryl Tuffey was restricted to light duties, bowling six accurate overs for 11 runs.
Short scoreboard:
Canterbury XI 350-7 (T Papps 119, N Broom 92, G Stead 61, T McIntosh 31; M Orchard 2-25, G Aldridge 2-66) v Northern Districts.
