IMO trying to convert Sinclair into a make shift opener is nothing short of wasting his talent & strengths, yet further exposing his supposed weakness - absolutely crazy.

They did it to him b4 in ODIs (which then wrecked his form in Tests IMO), then they did the same with Vincent. Now they're doing it again to Sinclair & have thrown Fulton in as opener in his ODI debut!!!!!!

:wacko:

Yes the selection of Sinclair to open is just plain stupid. Fulton opening was probably a bad idea - I hope he takes McMillan or Harris' place in the middle order today. Vincent opening was another stupid idea (although obviously it worked first time).

Dunedin metro will play Southland in a game on Sunday.

three Otago players will play in Wilson, Wasim and Harvie.

But both teams will be missing some players due to the U19 trial, which is stupid because if they are good enough to represent the district senior side then they should be shoe ins for the provinces U19 team

How many times will Wilson get injured this season? It really played a huge factor on his performances last season.

Wilson was an unexpected inclusion - can't have been much of a honeymoon.

:p

Other players in the Southland team are former Canterbury B bowler Simon Murphy and one time Otago players Paul Henry and Mark Bilcliff.

Jeez, had Jeff Wilson not been injured, he would have been a very good chance of making the Black Caps again when SA toured...

what would be the characteristics of the intnl pitches in NZL thesedays.........

E.G. - it used to be that The Basin was known to take spin & would tend to be on the Dry side of things;
Eden Park would swing & seam early b4 flattening out;
Cant / Jade would have some pace & bounce & the best batting surface;
Hamilton would be a seamers wicket...........

looking at the pace & bounce at The Basin v RSA, I'm wondering if one of the problems in NZL domestic cricket atm is that most of the pitches are too much the same & there isn't enough variety for players to hone their skills under different pitch types........

I remember squad selections for previous tours 10 - 20 years ago would include batting 'specialists' for the conditions - eg good players of spin to go to sub-continent..............perhaps we can no longer determine the like re the above?????

any thoughts??????????????

The pitches in Otago Molyneux, Varsity Oval, Q-town events centre and the brook, Should all be hard and fast by the start of the season. The weather we have had down here has been perfect for good pitches, then add in the great soil types there should be some good scores from the start of the season.

The Dominion Post had an excellent two-page spread on the state of pace bowlers in NZ on Friday. I may post the full thing on CW if it beomes available online.

[Academy coach Dayle Hadlee] points to Nelson 21-year-old Richard Sherlock, who transferred over the winter from CD to Canterbury, and ND teenager Te Ahu Davis as exciting prospects.

"Sherlock reportedly hit speeds of 150kmh in South Africa [on last month's New Zealand A tour], that's got to be the quickest since Shane Bond and before that Gary Bartlett.".

"And there is Ian Butler. I liken him to in a lot of ways to Richard [Hadlee] at a similar age. He's young, rapid, and got a bit to learn.
"Butler is similar now to how Chris Cairns was on his first tour to Australia."

Millmow's summary....

A panel of experts met for the first time in Christchurch two weeks ago, among them were Richard Hadlee, Shane Bond, Simon Doull, Dayle Hadlee and Denis Aberhart. Much overdue was the inclusion of Richard Hadlee on that panel.

The greatest mystery in NZ over the last decade is not so much who potted in the dope smokers on the tour of SA in 1995 but why Hadlee has not been running his eye over every promising bowler in the land.

Speaking from experience, Hadlee is not the type to volunteer information. But when sought out and asked specifically on an issue he is a veritable fount of knowledge.

AUS have used Dennis Lillee to their advantage - NZ should have done likewise long ago with Hadlee. Things may be looking up.

Not quite sure how they were measuring Sherlock's speed. I do have vague memories of a TV umpire being mentioned on some of the scorecards over in SA.

Martin Crowe probably could've bought that for a pittance for Sky, but he'd rather have Parore and 6 others in the comm box with him to cover a State Shield game... 8-)

I'd still like Sherlock to spend this summer playing First Class cricket & playing in another 'A' tour before we go rushing him into the NZ team.
Another year and he'll be a bit wiser & probably stronger too.

Butler to me, has not shown enough progress after the 2 or 3 years he's been in the NZ set-up. He's still only 22 or 23 so he's got time to mature yet but im hoping it'll click for him sooner rather than later as NZ desperately need some faster bowlers to step up to the plate at the moment.

Te Ahu Davis is probably another 2 or 3 years away from international cricket...unless he has an absolutely stellar debut season for N.D.

I'd definitely agree with that, but I'm pleased it sounds like there is at least some potential there.

Hopefully it isn't just the academy hyping up names in the press to cover their own backsides regarding what they've actually achieved. I would've thought for the funding the get they could've at least taught Butler how to move the ball consistently or bowl more intelligently, but I'm yet to see much evidence.

Perhaps Millmow is right - now that Hadlee is getting more involved, we might finally have someone with the first-hand knowledge to make a difference. The rest all have their video technology and textbooks, but unless they know what they're doing it counts for nothing. I doubt Wasim, Waqar and Shoaib had the benefit of it in Pakistan.

thats an understatement, the pitch is a mess......
yep - but those were my recollections from a decade ago by my move offshore................

Napier used to be a great batting strip but the last couple of ODIs have shown low, slow & irregular bounce - and that's in the 1st innings!!!!!

I know the recent poor weather seasons have been blamed for a lot of damage but I'm curious if the basic characteristics have changed - or are they all inconsistant & changeable????

Sky should really install some speedometers for the State games, good for me to judge how fast our typical NZ seamers bowl at. :D

Sherlock at 150km/h? That is definitely not bad. But most of the NZ press seems to be missing the point. It wasn't just pure pace that was why Bond was so successful. You often see (eg. that inswinging yorker to dismiss Gilchrist in the VB) was only around 140km/h. Bond was pretty damn accurate for an express fast bowler, and also swung it. I hope "pace" is not only Sherlock's only trick.
