Official NRL 2006 Thread

Souths should go. I don't care about their history, they have offered nothing for too long. I say give them til 2010 or whenever the TV deal runs out and then if they still haven't improved give them the chop.

The NRL are too slow with expansion. Union got a team in Perth and the crowds have got behind them. League should have got back there before union.

People say there isn't enough talent for any more teams... that may well be true in Australia but a second kiwi team should be an option IMO.

Melbourne may go eventually as well...

until the Warriors sort themselves out theres no chance of a 2nd NZ team...
Adelaide is the place to go imo, they would get behind a team...

Melbourne hasn't worked, get rid of them.

Try Adelaide and Perth again, without Super League getting in the way this time.

Bring in Central Coast.

That is all.

They need to take Origin matches and Test matches (the competitive Aust v NZ games) into these capital cities (like Union have done for a few years in Perth) to get the level of interest up, and expose the people to some top quality games, before they put teams into these traditionally non-league cities.

Now that Perth has a taste of what it's like to have a code similar to league (with the Force) I think they would be more inclined to get behind the Reds again. Reality is, there are way too many Sydney teams...if NRL wants to become a national competition it's going to have to expand it's bases like the VFL did so successfully. We have way too many Sydney teams at the moment and not enough interstate teams.

I used to support the North Sydney Bears so I know exactly what it feels like...I was a huge fan but I realised there was no use complaining about the past and got over it.

Although if the Bears deserved to get kicked out of the competition then Souths are lucky to be there.
The Bears never sucked (at least not while I've been following league). They were just really boring.

They dropped out due to financial hassles didn't they?

Anyway, keep the Bunnies. I'm a big fan of retaining a bit of tradition.

The Bears sucked in their last couple of years in the competition, but when JT and Florimo were at their best we were unlucky to never make a grand final. I actually thought the Bears were an excellent attacking football team...hardly what you'd call a boring side at all.

Union already has an established following in Perth, so the Force had an advantage, ie. a pre-existing fan base. I think 16 NRL teams is enough. Adding more just dilutes the talent pool and produces lower quality football.

There's even less talent here. The Warriors have been poor for most of their history, why would a second team be any better? The only way is to ensure the team has the best players it can get, foreign or otherwise, rather than idiotically focussing on kiwi players like the Warriors do.

You're right. I lived in Melbourne until recently and I can tell you that the general attitude to league there is extremely hostile. The Storm will eventually fail, and when they do, they should be relocated, either to the Central Coast or Wellington.

i liked Norths, but they had no choice but to merge in the end, it was either that or die, the rest is history now...
they were a good side in the mid ninties, 94 was probably their best chance of a premiership though...

It would be a shame to see Souths go as they are a club with a great history (plus having the coolest kit in League, IMHO), but I'm inclined to agree. There's dozens of quality kiwi youngsters dotted around the non-Warriors teams so the talent is clearly there.

The other option (and it's more from left field) I'd like to see would be to have a team in Papua New Guinea. It's their national sport & League has been too slow historically to grasp the nettle in terms of spreading the gospel.

Meh, you say tomayto, I say tomarto. I thought the Bears relied way too much on JT's goalkicking, too often opting for penalties rather than attempting to score a try. It's a poisonous tendency that is one of the reasons why union is such a horrible sport to watch.

Our best shot at the grandfinal was in 1997....Hey what ever happpened to Matty Sears?

Does anyone else agree that there are way too many Sydney teams though?

Yes, but I'm reluctant to chop any of them in favour of expanding the game into the heathen territories, I like tradition and history. Probably best to wait for the Storm to fail and then move them elsewhere, if you want another new team.

Edit: actually, what is annoying me about the Sydney teams is their gradual creep towards the black hole that is Telstra Stadium. Does it strike anyone else as ridiculous that South Sydney are now playing their football out there in the west? Or that the Tigers are playing some home games there despite having two perfectly good grounds of their own? Anyway, where's the attraction in playing in front of 18,000 in a stadium designed for 80,000?

If this continues to it's logical conclusion, we'll end up with the farcical AFL scenario whereby all teams end up playing at the same ground, and there's no more home and away.

It has, however, been one of the NRL's goals to make the game more popular on an national level. I'm not sure how they are going to do that though by putting a 3rd team in Queensland over any other state (SA, WA).

A worthy goal, but one that is destined to be always out of reach, I fear. The problem with any sport is that it pretty much has to be ingrained in the consciousness of people while they're still young. The further problem is that say, a Victorian boy is going to have his dad encouraging him to follow AFL, and his dad is going to complain bitterly about how crap league is, over and over and over.

Even if that kid somehow still falls in love with league, by the time he grows up and is part of a demographic that's valuable to the Storm, the Storm will have in the mean time died through years of poor revenue. They are a business after all.

The AFL has been quite sucessful promoting the game throughout Australia though. It is incredibly popular in South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory now. AFL have promoted the game as part of Australian culture and a part of who we are...

For sure. You Australians are a rabidly patriotic bunch.
