Then again left field selections have been a trademark of Craig Bellamy. Cooper Cronk for one.

Matt Rua was a very good player for the Storm a few years ago, signed for the raiders but never played a game because he was home sick. Havent heard of anything from him since that.

Comparing a young gun in Cronk to an ageing player who hasn't played NRL in years in Rua is bordering on ridiculous.

Rua wouldnt be that old, around 27-28 id guess, if he is still fit and has the fire in the belly he would be an asset to any nrl club

If he was any real good he would have been playing NRL all this time, but best of luck to him to prove me wrong.

You are correct, Rua is 27.

BTW Simon what ever happened to former Broncos hooker Michael Ryan?

Michael Ryan? Don't think he did. Sure as hell didn't play for the Dragons.

The Gold Coast Titans will play their first game against the Dragons, but at Suncorp - the reason being that Carrarra ATM can only fit 17,000 fans (thank you very much Ron Clarke) due it getting prepared for some AFL games to be played there and since it is their first game lot's more fans won't have the chance to see the game if played on the GC. But the Broncos kick off the season on Friday night North Queensland in the traditional opening round Queensland derby.

While Newcastle are set to kick off their season against the Bulldogs at Energy Australia stadium on the other Friday night game, while the Sharks play the Panthers in another fiesty opener, Canberra will be up against it with a brand new squad and have a tough trip to Brookevale Oval to play Manly. The Warriors start their season at home against old foes Parramatta while in the match where there is absolutely no love lost between them - Melbourne are at home to Wests Tigers.

Thoughts on R1?

I forgot to mention Nate Myles is in trouble again with drink driving and Steve Turner still hasn't bothered to turn up yet on the Gold Coast.

I guess he doesn't want to join up (although if he does somehow get out of his contract wouldn't the NRL just deregister him?). Personally he should just pull his head in and get on with it and respect his contract. He agreed to it and it wasn't as though Michael Searle put a knife to his throat and forced him to come here.

Ahh the Welsh team. They're odds on to be one of the two new teams in Super League when it expands and dumps promotion/relegation in 2009.

Unless I missed it, who have the Roosters got?
Souths in the Monday night game...

interestingly the draw isnt too different to round 1 2006. Roosters beat Souths, Cowboys beat Brisbane and Canberra beat Manly. The rest are all different though...
