Well India fought well and the bowlers performed above expectations. On batters performance, a total of 507 runs were scored in 4 innings in the test match with the loss of 36 wkts! I think thats says it all !

The least said about the pitch the batter, though i would not like to take the credit from the Kiwi team, they deserve the victory.

Much better show by India although it didn't alter the scoreline in their favour. It's going to be a great psychological blow going into the one dayers. I would say, starting odds, 70:30 in NZ's favour.
Well it is going to be a long series, difficult to predict the outcome, all i can say that is India won't be that easy to beat as they were in Test matches.I think NZ might have an edge primarily because of homeground which will be a big factor in the series.I think the result of the series will be close, something like 4-3 or so!

A shame about the weather affecting the pitch, but the toss did not seem to play a big role with India securing a 1st innings lead & a moral victory (their only 'victory' of the series)!!!!

IMO NZ won as a result of their batsmen putting together little partnerships of 20 - 30 runs, which did not give the Indian bowlers the opportunity to make regular inroads to the inexperienced players below Astle. When they finally got the break thru' NZ was 'saved' by lunch and able to regroup as the Indian momentum had gone!!!

Apart from their batting, India's Captain was a disappointment. Their highlights would be the performance of Khan taking 2 5w bags in each Test, and the promise shown by Youhanna & Nehra who both justified their selections ahead of AA in the final Test.

For NZ the batsmen still appear short of an innings or 2, with Vincent & McMillan both needing to score runs. Bond was also a disappointment, while Tuffey & Oram were revelations. Tuffey deservedly got MOTM (and must be a good bet for MOTS), while Oram showed prospects as a genuine allrounder contender for the future & the post Cairns era.

I still do not like the idea of playing both Styris & Oram as their lack of experience along with Hart makes it a long tail from Astle (Cairns???) down. I also think the selection of a 5th bowler in Vettori was a wasted selection under these pitch conditions, and another batsman should have been used.

Now onto the ODI series where India will be a different prospect altogether.

IMO the Indians would start as favorites: the pitches will not be so bowler friendly; their game is better suited to the OD format; they have a fairly settled lineup; they have incoming players who will not be affected by the Test performances; and they have had the recent ODI series v WI to be 'match fit'.

The Kiwis still have injury doubts re their squad (Carins, Adams etc); their lineup is unsettled aside from injuries (especially at the top); they lack recent match play; the only batsman to show 'form' in the Test series will not be selected (Richardson); and IMO their recent selections have been at least 1 batsman short as they have included too many all rounders!!!

The Kiwis are already committed to using the same core of batsmen from the Test side, and I can not see any justification for major changes to the bowling attack based upon the Test results. Accordingly I can see the following look to the side: Astle, Fleming, Vincent, McMillan, Harris, Cairns, McCullum, Oram, Vettori, Tuffey, Bond & Styris as 12th man. McCullum & Oram could be used as 'pinch hitters', and I would like to see McCullum bat around 5 or 6 to mix in with the experience with Harris & Cairns while he is trying to re-establish his batting.

If NZ surprise and are able to compete in the early matches, they may be able to sneak a series win as they become 'match hardened' as the series progresses.

ok so the NZ team for the 1st ODI has been released as follows:

Fleming, Astle, Vincent, McMillan, Sinclair, McCullum, Oram, Vettori, Tuffey, Bond, Mills, & Hitchcock.

Cairns, Harris & Adams were unavailable due to their injuries, although Harris & Adams are said to be in contention for Game 3. No word regarding Cairns' return.

The NZ selectors are concerned that they now only have 2 matches (domestic) to asses the fitness & form of players b4 having to announce their final 15 man squad for the WC. (Note: if you include the 3 unavailable players you have a good indication as to the probable 15 the selectors are looking at!!!) I am pleased to see Sinclair included but still concerned that we only have 5 specialist batsmen in the potential 15.

So far as the 1st ODI XI goes I am expecting / hoping Hitchcock to be named as 12th man, with Astle used as cover for the 5th bowling position if required. Mills will likely be selected as the game is to be played on his home ground. The last thing I want to see is a batsman dropped & 5 specialist bowlers selected along with an all rounder!!!!!

I'm going to go for 5-2 New Zealand (or more likely 4-2)
While I'd love to see that I can't see it happening just yet........

Not a chance - there's always room for AA in World Cricket.

If he's surpassed by another as the object of most of this forum's discussion, then maybe I would change, but until then...

That's (apparently) the first time a Test has been completed without a single fifty since 1936.

NZ's win came down to batsmen fighting for double figure scores and making little partnerships rather than throwing wickets away and seeing 2 or 3 go down for ten runs.

The ODIs will be very close, I think, though the Indian bowling might just let NZ's deep batting and good hitters get away with a tight win. Oram may well hold the key for NZ in Cairns and Adams' absence.

And look for AA to star :)

India are at par with NZ in the second test match, got a 5 run lead so they aren't behind NZ yet! Not all is lost till date!
Which team is the current best Test team in the world? Not New Zealand...yet India go down 2-0...

We've discussed this already.

What is this suppose to mean ???? India are rated below NZ in TEST matches and NZ deservingly won the series on their home ground.

Would be interesting to see as to whether Patel gets a proper chance to justify his inclusion. Patel is also usefull with the bat, hope he gets atleast 2 matches to play.

I know, I was thinking 4-2 more likely with the weather, and it would be statistically more likely to take out an NZ win then an Indian one!

I'd have taken Kartik rather than Kumble, who hasn't done much at all recently and can't turn it..:saint:

You think 5-2 is unlikely, I think you could have got much longer odds on WI winning 4-3 in India.

I say NZ narrowly.
