**Official** New Zealand v Australia

Excpet it doesn't work like that.

Warne will bowl more, McGrath will bowl more, and suddenly the workload left is much less than 3 bowler's worth.

Surely NZ can't take Papps to Africa next spring, so I'd have to question the merits of playing him before then. If Cumming doesn't do well enough I'd start grooming Marshall or How, perhaps v SL at McLean Park.

I know some people will be groaning 'god, don't ruin Marshall by making him into a makeshift test opener'. If we think about it though, when Styris and Oram come back (let's say either Vincent or McMillan do reasonably well), a more permanent top-order home needs to be found for Marshall. I know you shouldn't read too much into ODI's, but I think he's showing us that he's one of the few options in the country who has the technical and mental requirements to cope.
James Marshall can open the batting try him. Try How but for gods sake do not turn Hamish into an opener. He plays well at 5-6 keep him there

James Marshall
Astle
Fleming
Vincent
Marshall
Macca
ETC ETC

But Marshall must not be turned into a opener (Even try McCullum there0

Twice in 8 balls? On an Eden Park pitch? Unless he corrects his technique markedly, I'm all ears as to how his troubles will cease.

No offence Ming, but I rate the opinion of the South African cricket team over your own technical expertise until then. They predicted exactly what would happen when Papps came across a genuinely quick bowler or surface, and I respect them for that.

I'm a bit confused (nothing new there) - initially I thought you were referring to the Test lineup regarding the openers - however this looks like a ODI lineup with Astle opening - not exactly what I'd be looking for................

that aside I agree re Papps - as much as I was calling for his selection last season I'd have to support his long term removal until such time as he inproves his 'front foot shuffle & crouch' technique..............

I'm also doubtful regarding the benefits of J Marshall as opener ahead of the likes of Cumming & How, and think he may be better suited to the middle order with his brother.......but b4 I make my mind up I'd like to see him batting on a decent surface.........

regardless of all this I'd be surprised if Cumming was to be dropped after 3 Tests v AUS, and I'd expect him to be retained for SRL where they may look to find a permanent partner for him (or replacement for Fleming in the middle order)...............

in the mean time any talk of Cumming failing is a bit premature IMO.....................

anybody else rekon Hodge should be in the team ahead of Katich?
Errr, no. I'd be interested in hearing any convincing reasons why because Katich has performed when he's been in the team for a while now.

Who do you guys think when Cummings fails they will bring in to open

Papps?
How?
Definately Michael Papps would be next in line. Maybe even Lou Vincent would be a candidate for the opening spot with Fleming if Cumming fails?

No, He isn't an opener.

James Marshall is a decent middle order player, but will never open the batting for New Zealand.
Jamie How opens regularly in the first class matches for Central Districts so I can't see where you're coming from there,

I tend to agree with James Marshall though, sure he's opened for Nothern Districts before but he'd be the type of player you'd want in the middle order alongside McMillan and Hamish.

I think what SM was trying to say is that James isn't an opener, not How.
Ah, misinterpreted that then. I was referring to the quote with Jamie How that Southern Man was talking about, sorry.

Thommo is, frankly, a bit of an idiot. And I don't think he'll be making too many friends in the Australian camp blasting Andrew Symonds and Lehmann, not to mention Brad Hogg who is especially likely to take offence given he is a specialist bowler.
Thats not the context of the article at all. Hes saying that Symonds and Lehmann can take OD wickets, so why aren't they also in contention for a blowing spot. He is simply stating that one day form shouldn't count and the incumbent is bowling very well.

So you would never consider Michael Papps again for a New Zealand side then? From what I remember, Harmisson didn't hit him on the head.

Have you ever thought that Papps could improve on his technique against the shorter ball?
