We did not play utter crap. Styris, Astle, Cairns and Vettori bowled very well, on a wicket that suited their type of bowling.

Man, some of your posts are frustrating to read. Oh we "played utter crap" when we came within 10 runs of beating the World Champions....
8-)

We should have won that game, god knows what Vettori was thinking though. He could have just pushed for ones when it was 13 off 13.

It's the truth, our batting in the last 4 matches has not been the best and without Glenn McGrath, Australia would of lost a lot more matches.
And you said Australia wouldent win a match in this series :D :D :D

NZ only got close because of a blind third umpire and showed thier true colors by throwing things at the players, pathetic display by the NZ crowd.
:D :D :D

I was replying to the guy saying that aussie played crap.

If he thinks aussie played crap.. then he should look at how nz played

u really think we were at our best in that game ? no way

i hope marshall gets it,that was an outstanding innings
As good an innings as it was, you can't take it away from McGrath. 4 for 16 off 9.4 overs makes him easily the one man who made the difference in my opinion. Replace his eco rate (1.66) with some other Aussie bowler's eco rate (say, 3.00, which is still good) and NZ would have won the match. It was his bowling, easily, that won the game.

You won the game so you can't have played terribly. Better to admit that it was a close game and both teams played well then patronise the other team by saying you played terribly and still won.

I can't believe people are saying the teams played like crap. You have to blame the pitch for the type of batting you saw today. It was low, slow and not coming on - it was a grinding type wicket - the sort of wicket if you batted on in a test you might expect 200 -250 in a day. To try to come in and smash from the start is very hard, thats why you saw lots of wickets fall.

I just think its worth mentioning that Brett Lee bowled quite well tonight, compared to Kapsrowicz who once again got smashed by the Kiwis.

I can't believe Australia have the luxury of 'dropping' Gillespie.
I couldn't watch the game (I was checking cricinfo here and there), but it seems like Lee is getting remarkably little credit here for the victory - I certainly felt the game was as good as gone until Lee shattered Vettori's stumps. He has been great at the death in recent matches.

McGrath truly is a god among bowlers though.

What a game this must have been. The Kiwis are a very good one-day outfit - halfway through their innings, I was sure THEY were gone. The steel the Aussies show in defending a total when things look really bad is amazing.

This game's been pretty good for my fantasy cricket team, all round. I noticed that Marc hasn't got a team up yet - SUSS! :)

Incredible match, outstanding comeback from New Zealand after Astle was dismissed and we seemed to have no chance.

Marshall was brilliant, and McMillan showed exactly why he deserves to be in the side. McCullum and Marshall's combination was sensational.

McGrath was the difference really. Seven overs for seven runs at the start and another spell at the end was superb bowling and he remains one of a kind.

Great opening match, who needs Twenty20, four more ODIs will do just nicely!

I said Struggle to win, which tonight we won but struggled to do it, and we will continue to struggle through out the series.

I never meant to patronise NZ, I said in a earlier post that a few silly mistakes lost them the match and other than that they deserved to win, they bowled and batted better than us.

That innings by Marshall really gives him the edge ahead of the other candidates (Oram, McMillan, Vincent) for the Test 6 spot. Good to see how he can adjust his game according to the situation of the match. Started out as a 3, now a 5/6/7....
