**Official** New Zealand v Australia

interesting comment heard from Coney that he thought this pitch looked like a Day 2 - 2 1/2 pitch at the start of the match..........

could this be looking to nullify the seam movement (hence NZL selecting 3 'swing' bowlers) and to give Vettori some assistance??????

if so why didn't they play Wiseman?????

Why should Hayden walk when players grass a catch and then try to make out they caught it. Besides nobody in the NZ team ever walks.
McCullum?

He walks... Or asks the bowler/keeper if he was out if they say yes he goes.

also interested in their conjecture regarding the standard of swing bowling & theories re front on v side on delivery..............although McGrath makes a mockery of that theory as he's very front on - while Wasim was side on...............

unfortunately I don't know if D Fleming made any comments re this back in the studio - would have been interested to hear his views re not only his current position at the Acadamy but also his bowling style..............

Yes, but nobody should be expected to walk. I'd say 90-99% of international players don't walk, no reason to say that someone should.

There is no reason people should. I would not.

Do you think Australia would have struggled for penetration so much on the first morning if Lee had been playing instead of Kasprowicz?
With the tactics employed by the NZ batsmen - yes.

You wouldn't Retox? I guess that means that you haven't had the opportunity to walk? :smile1: I don't think that I have....

This isn't the walking thread is it?

Does Hamish Marshall have a twin??

How do you come up with that statement?

I thought Fleming did? Maybe I am wrong. Brendon McCullum certainly does.

Australia's approach to this match has been incredibly arrogant.

Firstly, they dont bother picking their most in form bowler.

Then Ponting wins the toss on a flat wicket and sends the opposition in as if expecting them to capitulate no matter what.

Im glad the Kiwis are on top as the Australian management needs a kick in the ****.

i don't know if it's so much arrogance as being a tactic that backfired because they didn't have the right weapons to execute it.................Lee

I've already said earlier that IMO the NZL top 4 was vulnerable on paper - AUS have every right to expect it to fold & expose the middle & lower orders quickly................

I guess no one told Cumming & Marshall especially what the plan was!!!!!

:D

Lee was not picked because noone else had lost form. Ponting would have been looking to continue the mental advantage by taking early wickets, i wouldn't call it arrogant, NZ certainly got smashed in the ODI's.

there's still 3 more days to go so there's a lot of cricket b4 the postmortems can begin re any AUS tactics...............remember NZL were in strong positions v ENG but lost in the last Day & 1/2..............

AUS tends to learn quickly re batting weaknesses (and Marshall has been the dominant factor for the NZL partnerships with Cumming & Astle)

and NZL still had a batting collapse of sorts today - loosing last 6 wickets for about 100 runs from the time of Marshall's departure...............

Certainly pleased with NZ's position going in to day 3, was expecting at the start of the game that we would be pretty much completely out of the game by now. The Australian batting lineup to come frightens me though, Ponting in at the moment with Katich, Clarke and Gilchrist the next 3...then Warne who likes batting against us and even McGrath at 11.

All sessions in test cricket are crucial....but you can't help feel the first session tomorrow morning will be the big deciding factor. If Australia can go wicketless or even lose just 1 wicket, then they will be on top.....if NZ can get 2-3 wickets, then it will be back to evens, but if NZ could 4 or more wickets first session, then Aust will really be under pressure.

Unfortunately as a NZ'er, I pick Aust to lose only 1 wicket(if that). Hope i'm wrong

I'd put NZ ahead at this point, but not by a lot. Aus has a lot of batting to come ( even McGrath would bat at 9 for NZ ), but 3 down while being over 300 behind is never a good thing.

Hehe, yeah, I love it when people say "this next session is crucial" every single session. :D Commentators do it all the time.

You can't really judge how NZ's position is until Aussie are 6-7 wickets down. When playing Aussie, once you get rid of Gilly and all above him, then you know where you stand. But at least NZ have shown that they're competing and they do have the possibility of a good lead, which is awesome.
