Sigh. Apparently Reece Young has been told to pack his bags for the Windies so I assume Watling is heading home.

We have a few members here who use the term whenever Nethula is mentioned. Without naming names, one of them became a complete parody of himself during the New Zealand summer with it.
Gives me a point of difference over the other million posts where I agree with you tbf.

Don't know whether you're referring to me, but I do think Nethula is unfortunate to play in a time when we prefer three quicks and Vettori to be our bowling unit.

Cricinfo at it again:

New Zealand: (possible) 1 Rob Nicol, 2 Martin Guptill, 3 Brendon McCullum (capt), 4 Kane Williamson, 5 Dean Brownlie, 6 Tom Latham, 7 Jacob Oram, 8 Tim Southee, 9 Nathan McCullum, 10 Doug Bracewell, 11 Kyle Mills
Jesus, the team was basically named yesterday morning and they still can't even get close.

So I guess that'll mean

Guptill
Nicol
McCullum
Taylor
Williamson
Flynn/Brownlie
McCullum
Oram
Southee
Mills/Bracewell
Boult

Looking much better now.
Yeah I actually have a bit of faith in that batting lineup.

But really, why not have:

Guptill
Flynn
McCullum
Taylor
Williamson
Brownlie

and make that our top 6 in all formats until Ryder sorts himself our. Nicol can gagf.

Look I know Nicol looks terrible a lot of the time, but he has actually constructed a few ODI innings and does imo deserve a bit more rope after being one of the best domestic limited over batsmen last couple of years. Also I think he is at least a little better than his ODI scores so far, where he's looked pretty nervous. Contrast to Flynn, who often looks a million bucks but doesn't have a great domestic LO record and seems to find ways of getting out. Flynn's undoubtedly a better batsman and that's why he's in the test side. He keeps looking like he'll perform in the ODIs and I'd like to see him get more chances.... but he needs to actually perform a little first.

I doubt Nicol will do enough to retain his ODI place in the medium term but unless we definitively have better options (like maybe a full uninjured squad including a revitalised Ryder), then I think Nicol should get a couple more series to prove that he's either not up to it (likely) or maybe just capable of swatting some fours and scoring some ugly runs (possible).

Anyone who scores runs with a technique that bad must have at least some talent! [/flawlesslogic]

Nah, he's earned a few more games. As long as he doesn't become a career-saving innings specialist.

So let's see....

Nicol:
ODI Average: 43.5
List A Average: 37.2
In 12 ODIs Nicol has 2x100 and 2x50.

Flynn:
ODI Average: 16.3
List A Average: 25.4
In 19 ODIs Flynn has a highest score of 35.

I'm not actually a big Nicol fan. He has a limited game. But in ODIs, I'd pick him ahead of Flynn every time.
