Yeah it's one of those ones where I honestly wouldn't mind if umpires started being tougher, but as it stands umpires generally don't bother since it'd be such a substantial change and a difficult to police one at that. It's not a black and white matter at all.

At any rate it's not a shocker.

Man this Test is has been quite the setup for an exciting finish. Think this series has turned out pretty even. So glad Wagner picked up 4 wickets too!

Looks like the kind of pitch where driving with poor technique can get you in trouble. There's a bit of inconsistent bounce, and if you're driving at something that's not a genuine half volley you're vulnerable to catches at gully/short cover. Brathwaite did it yesterday, Bravo today, and there were a few squirts through gully and slips too.

A side note on Brathwaite from the little I've seen - he looks quite solid, but is very bottom handed, particularly when he drives. Possibly came about from trying to increase his strike rate?

theres no way mccullum isnt playing a shot there. though there is definitely a conspiracy against wi due in the most part to the amusement which is to be garnered from witnessing a certain poster's butthurt about it. long may it continue

Oh, **** me Ramdin's keeping has been woeful. I thought it had been poor from the little I've seen of this series, but it's beyond poor. He's coughed up 50 byes so far this series, and the missed catch and missed stumping of Williamson could be vital.

Watling with just 6 conceded otoh, WAFG.

Ramdin used to be quite good, but on their tour here he was untidy and now he's a mess. I'm not sure how long he's been in decline but he needs to sort himself out. I feel for the guy because he's taken on the captaincy and has improved his batting out of sight, but his primary role is to catch balls and he's not doing very well.

He's a bit of a douche but you have to respect his taking responsibility for a lot of important roles in his side. He's quite a capable keeper when in form so after this series if he works on it he should be good.

Yeah we've been really lucky with BJ Watling's keeping ability. i wasn't hoping for much and he wasn't expected to be that great, but he has easily been better than Reece Young and at least as good as Kruger and the others.

reece young was miles better than KvW and the others. Young was the best keeper in the country.
OMG - Correction someone came on to this site once and said he was the best keeper in the Plunket Shield by miles. And then everyone else repeated it like it was a given fact even though it was one posters opinion. Then he debuted for the blackcaps and couldn't catch a cold (with one exception a diving catch to win the Zimbabwe test).
If he was the best keeper in the Plunket shield then he was overcome with nerves on the big stage and didn't "express himself". If I had a dollar for every catch that went between him and first slip I would be a rich man.

I rate Watling very highly, keeps well consistently and is a gritty batsman. Goes about his business very quietly too, no air of swagger about him. His expression upon taking Roach's catch was nice to watch.

Haven't watched the other NZ keepers you guys are talking about so won't comment on them.

nah just look at his footwork.

It was KvW for whom catches would always go between him and first slip.

Reece Young was a good keeper imo, though he made one costly ****-up vs Australia that tends to stick in the memory. Think all our keepers from that period suffer a bit in hindsight since McCullum had been there for so long; both in terms of their own keeping and the effect it had on the rest of the slip cordon. It's a combination thing, can be a bit hard to explain but if you're in the slips (particularly first) you get used to a certain keeper, and it can be jarring to suddenly change.

Huge first session, whoever comes out on top could go a long way to winning the match. Looks evenly poised at present and hopefully we get no more bad weather to ruin the game.

From memory Taylor and Van Wyk never worked well, a lot of catches went down in between them. Now anything even a fraction to the left of Taylor is taking by Watling, must make his life so much easier.

Sounds like BMc used some interesting and effective fields today. For Edwards dismissal looks like a 6 man on-side field, 3 in short mid wicket / straight mid wicket area + long leg + deep square leg + mid on, with Southee bowling full at the stumps. IMHO he sometimes sets over-attacking fields, but certainly makes the game more interesting.
