My predictions:

* New Zealand declare overnight.
* India bat for two days and get bowled out for 550-600.
* New Zealand bat until tea on day 5 and India bat out to a draw
agreed that would seem the expected thing to do & happen, but I think there is more at stake here than a predictable 'boring' draw.

Fleming always has a game plan and I have a sneaking suspicion (hope) that he will use this opportunity to make a real statement.

Perhaps the pitch may start to do something more later on Days 4 & 5, so why not bat on thru the first session and target 600+. You then have enough runs in the bank to really attack the Indian batsmen on a deteriorating pitch & make them struggle to hold out for the draw.

There is an opportunity to really impose some emphatic dominance over the Indians. As it is they have not had to face this size 1st innings for a long time, but they have enough time to bat for 3 days to vercome this.

You have nothing to loose by ramming it home and seeing how they cope with that sort of follow on pressure at Home for a change, particularly if you can bowl better on 'their' pitch than they can, coupled with a better fielding effort, innovative field placings to further stifle their natural game, and a very shrewd & astute Captain leading a team that is on a high.

An opportunity to emulate something that Australia does fairly well - not ease up when you have the opposition down, but to increase the pressure of your foot on their throat and who knows what may happen.

I think (hope) that there are a few more turns in this match yet!

Hmm... another boring draw, most probably.
Depends on how far NZ bat on - another 100 or so runs, and India face a big challenge to avoid the follow-on, and who knows what would happen in that scenario?

The Indians are well and truly on the back foot here with no realistic chance of winning this series....If the New Zealanders put up another 100 runs on the board, we will have a real task on our hands just avoiding the follow on. If the pitch deteriorates as the match progresses, India could be in even more trouble......they could very well fall into the pit they dug for NZ. Sadly they only have themselves to blame.

And Shewag has got a hundred, he likes Wiseman's bowling. He has been unthreatening.

At stumps on Day 3 - India 203-1.

I would like to know Ian Butler made the NZ team. He is not accurate and he does fall away from his action and wont generate as much pace as he can get.

Yet failing away at the point of delieving the ball? Fix this up, and he can improve greatly, as he has the height, he should make the most ofi t.

Butler is in the team as a result of Oram breaking down - there was still a chance he may have been selected ahead of Wiseman anyhow.

He made the squad because of NZ cricket strategy to pursue a pace option in their seam attack. Yes he is young and raw, but he has exciting potential - some think he can be faster than Bond as he strengthens up and improves his technique.

Unlike years past NZ seems to have decided to encourage him to keep developing his pace while trying to refine his action. Past philosophy was to drop a yard or so for the sake of control.

His potential at this stage is in the Brett Lee role for NZ, as I do not see Tuffey being relegated to 1st change just yet.

It should be noted that you would probably have to go back to possibly Hadlee's debut series (when he had that shuffle & long run up) & NZ's first test victory over England (when he bowled with Richard Collinge who was NZ's leading wicket taker), to find the last time NZ had 2 seamers of genuine pace in the starting side. That's a loooong time between drinks - at least 2 careers if you take Hadlee then his successor in Morrison!!!

well done Craig McMillan & welcome back or should I say welcome to the new & improved Macca??? Great to see that he appears to have put the demons of his last 2 seasons behind him in the most emphatic way, by leading the run scoring for the team in a series where all of the batsmen have scored tons apart from the Captain.

Great to see Vettori shining with the bat in his most productive series in years, probably since he scored that 90. Not only has Vettori scored well, but his strike rate has been very impressive.

It's great to be able to talk about the batting in a positive note. :D

Well done the Indian openers Chopra & Sehwag for their respective 1/2 & century. With Dravid joining Sehwag & SRT to follow the Indians should feel reasonable confident of avoiding the follow on.

The opening session tomorrow may hold the key for this match.....at least I'll finally get to see some of the play!!!!

This pitch appears to be a pathetic excuse for a Test wicket and seems to only be serving to cancel out the averages wrecked in New Zealand last winter.

These things are no more use for Test Cricket than the aformentioned Kiwi joke pitches.

And the WisdenCricinfo comment was praising of Butler - not that I've seen any play.

while we must acknowledge that we have had back to back series between these 2 nations where the pitches have been counter productive to good cricket, we must recognise that both of the respective cricket boards are trying to develop 'non-traditional' pitches, and that during the development phase that things will not always go according to plan.

I think both are trying to develop pitches with more pace and bounce (to varying degrees) - NZ got a couple of wet green tops following late winter rains, and India got a couple of placid batting mats that neither seamed, bounced, turned nor broke up.

However I think both should be praised for their initiative & encouraged to continue to progress in their development towards their objectives, not just for the sake of their teams, but for the benefit of cricket as a whole.

Hopefully the lessons will be learned and mistakes will not be repeated.

if they ain't going to come out to play when "SRT2" gets a test ton as an opener then my guess is we'll have to wait for 'the pajama party' to begin.......

So people are now complaining because the pitches are too good! Wisden Cricinfo came up with "To term it an atrocity would be an understatement"

Scathing stuff about a strip of packed earth...

Ian Butler is very reminiscent of an early Andy Bichel with the way he bowls, especially his left-arm. Like Bichel, he's quick but doesn't get a great deal of movement in the air. I think he looks quite good but he may struggle to reach the pace of someone like Bond (then again, Bond may struggle to reach the pace of Bond after this latest injury).
